Anyone wanna play the angel on my shoulder or should I just ship it now?

Would that be your tier 2 DSLR of choice? I'd like to keep with Nikon since I have a lower level telephoto I just bought for my D40.

well there is the D90 sitting at like 900 for the body, its larger and has a nicer LCD + more battery power and a top LCD

beyond those few features, the D5000 offers all the same imaging abilities, and some options in the D5000 are not in the D90 -- D5000 is more affordable but smaller, feeling a larger body in your hand can be much more comfortable -- they both are going to have the same low light ability with clean ISO up to 3200 (but honestly after 2000 it drops off)

beyond that the D300s is currently priced at $1799 body only, quite more expensive for an upgrade in durability and more control over your video

Not ready to drop $1800 on a camera, I could POSSIBLY be convinced to drop 1k if I had a good month.

If the difference between 90 and 5000 is more battery power and a nicer LCD then it's hands down 5000 (reading dpreview as we speak)

I'd agree the D5000 offers the best buy for the $$$, here is a run down of what the D90 has over the D5000:

A bit bigger monitor (also much higher resolution)
Illuminated top deck information panel
Dual Commander Dial operation
Larger, brighter .94x pentaprism viewfinder -- vs the darker D60/D5000 style viewfinder
Depth-of-Field Preview control
Built-in AF motor for non-AF-S NIKKORs
Built-in CLS Wireless Commander mode
18 Additional Custom Settings
Flash Exposure Bracketing
FP High Speed Sync

(no I didn't just type this up, I use it in a presentation)

I would say it depends on the lens -- but yes the AF of older lens' will work, I do not have any older AF lens around to test out with the D90

here is exactly as it is worded next to the D5000 lens compatibility in the current Nikon DSLR guide

image just shot with D90

(the D90 does have the focusing pin in the lens bayonet that the D5000 does not have)

Nice shot Ibullets.

I'm gonna try to fill some empty walls with some large prints probably 24x36. Anyone have any recommendations for a good place to make the prints as well as any frame buying recommendations? Thanks

I get just about all my printing done at Adorama, I have been very very happy with the results, I order them through their site since I am not in NYC, the largest I have ordered is 20x30.

if you want the best prints money can buy, find somewhere that will print with a DURST LAMBDA printer

Check Ken Rockwell's site, he does a lot of hardware testing: http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/compatibility-lens.htm

Personally, I'd get the D90 over the 5000 if you can afford it because it is compatible with more lenses and if you get serious you've already got the low end prosumer version. If you don't keep it up you'll be able to get more back for the D90 than the 5000.

I spot check when I post process by blowing the image up to close to 100% size and slowing scrolling back and forth across the image. At that size the spots stand out more because you're so zoomed in you don't see other details. Doing that was easier than getting the sensor cleaned on my D70S...

Just stumbled upon this thread:

I've been getting into photography over the last 6 months. I've got a D70 with an 18-200mm lens slapped on it, and though some people hate the lens I thought it was great for travel photography. I just got back from a trip to New Zealand/Aus about 2 months ago and here's one of my favorite shots - it was taken in Abel Tasman on this beach that we sailed to called the Anchorage - I got the bird's mouth open out of complete luck -

Find a location you want to do the shots in and ask people. You'll probably want a photo-release form for them to sign if you want to show off their pictures somewhere and some cards where they can email you for copies. That or put up some flyers around college theater departments looking for models in exchange for head shots.

Here is a sight if you want to work with models. There may be some who are looking for someone to take shots for them for free. My photog friend has worked with them with great results. I'm still trying to convince my wife of letting me shoot models.

Search Model Mayhem.....you can find ppl who want to get into modeling or who already are, and usually trade their time for the photos......and aren't bad on the eyes

lol

I've used this site a lot actually. You can post a casting call and explain exactly what you are looking for and people can contact you if they are interested.

You can also get make up artists...which is also something you might need to look into when doing head shots or portraiture.....

So......I've recently purchased the D700.......and my next two items of interest are a flash for wedding photography, and a zoom lens.

Trying to decide between the SB-800 and 900. I've heard that the 800 does the trick, and that the 900 has had problems and is known to over-heat.....

Also, trying to decide between buying the 70-200f2.8 VR used for like $1500, or waiting and getting the newer model for like 3K.

I don't have a lot of money......but do not want to buy something that isn't going to be top of the line quality........

I've heard that for the FX sensor the new 70-200 is well worth the price....any thoughts?

The new 70-200 may be great, but the old one is great, too. Just save the money and get the old one used.

As for flash, I thought the SB800 was discontinued? A quick look on Amazon says the SB800 is much more expensive, which only makes sense if it isn't made anymore.

recently got the panasonic gh1, thoughts on this? comes with a 14-140 "HD" lens

intend on going on 2-3 months of vacations next year and looking for advice on additional lenses. probably 1 lens since 14-140 pretty versatile already. most specialized usage will be on safari in africa. have been told want at least 300mm.

seems like the best (possibly only) options are:

olympus 70-300 http://www.four-thirds.org/en/fourth...to.html#70-300

sigma 50-500 http://www.four-thirds.org/en/fourth...ephoto.html#04

both are ok pricewise. sigma seems pretty massive, could be an issue for steadying properly?

You might need a monopod for the sigma, I'm not terribly experienced but some friends of mine suggested once you approach 400mm that a monopod is pretty necessary for stablizing.

Also yes, on Safari I would want greater than 300mm. I'm a noob and brought a 200mm max lens to Alaska with me to try out some wildlife pics, and was a little disappointed I didn't have more length to get pictures of caribou/moose/mountain goats...I can only imagine the situation is more extreme on a safari where you won't want to get very close to big cats

I've heard something like this: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc..._Platform.html works well

Unless I get any objections will take your advice and order the 50-500

The problem with the object above is that it appears you need to have some place to set the platform.

A monopod like this

will be height-adjustable, whereas the platform there will make shooting hell IMO.

I have that exact setup, it's great. 322RC2 and manfrotto monopod. I'm not sure what the model number for the monopod is, but there is one that's the exact same except tripod legs come out the bottom. (I can't say how sturdy they are/etc, though)

The ballhead doesn't seem that necessary if you're using a big telephoto that has a rotating ring on it. Very useful if you're using a smaller lens (where you'd have to pick up and rotate the entire camera/monopod to change orientation)
