If you don't get into PDT, there's a nice cocktail lounge a few blocks away although its hard to find, if you walk down 9th street towards astor place there's a sushi restaurant almost on the corner of 3rd avenue, you walk up the stairs and turn left immediately there's a door there and opens up to a quiet lounge that has nice window seating (you can only sit a maximum of 4 though)

Oh i found it, it's called Angel's share

Mixology--PDT, Clover Club if you feel like going to Brooklyn, Pegu Club for gin drinks, Mayahuel for mezcal drinks, Death & Co. are all in my top tier. Employees Only has a good reputation but the one time I was there was a weekend and it was a ****show.
Tertulia is my favorite new restaurant. Absolutely phenomenal and since I like cider I probably even like the place more than most.

Another mixology place is Raines Law Room. My GF actually got me a drink mixing class for two there that we are doing in a couple of weeks. Will report if it is worth it.

Hey guys,

Need a rec on what area to stay during a weekend visit. It'll be 2 buddies and me basically looking for somewhere that has a good restaurant and bar/club/lounge scene. Last time we stayed near Central Park at Le Parker Meridian, but I don't recall there being too many nightlife spots nearby (although I didn't try too hard to find any). If anyone is familiar with Chicago, we're basically looking for somewhere similar to the River North/Gold Coast area.

Thanks!

Chelsea has a ton of clubs, like around 23rd and 9th ave.

Best to look in Soho/W. Village area, but in reality you can find a place much cheaper in midtown and take a 10 minute subway ride to all the hot spots.

Dirt Candy, Hangawi, and Candle 79 might be options, depending on the price range you had in mind. These aren't gluten-free places, but have gluten-free menus or options (but call ahead, just to be sure).

All those are vegetarian places -- I've never had occasion to look for non-vegetarian gluten-free food.

Same here - my favorite part of the meal there is desert, so be sure to save room. Also, they usually have one really expensive thing (like a fish or beef dish) that serves several people - when I've had these they are definitely worth it. Don't let the price throw you, they'll say they have a fish special for $40 or something, but it's much larger than the standard $10 - $20 tapas items.

Have you been to Tertulia on a weekend? How long did you have to wait for a table? Might try it out this Friday. (edit saw you said 30m earlier, not bad at all, going to suggest it to group)

Went to Saraghina in Bed Stuy this weekend, usually don't venture to Brooklyn but really glad I did, very close copy of naples style pizza, had a bunch of other small plates too that were great (especially their octopus dish), really cute place, mix of hipsters/locals and everyday peeps and pretty reasonably priced 7 people ate and drank for about 300.

holllllllaaaaa, we moving up in the world. interesting you didn't pick roberta's since it's the same neck of the woods and has more hype but saraghina is our stumbling-distance go-to.

I went on a Saturday night at like 9:30 and had about a 30 minute wait for 2 people. Second time was on a Thursday night fairly early (like 7:30) and had a similar wait so may be a bit hit or miss. Since I live down that way my GF and I just pick 2-3 restaurants we want to try that are walk-in only and call to see which has the shortest wait.

If money doesn't matter and you want clubs, the best spot is going to be Meatpacking and staying at either the Standard or Gansevoort. Think there is a pretty good scene down in Soho as well but don't know it as well.

i've been to sushi samba a few times, never liked it much. usually poor service and i don't think the fish is that great, more of a gimmicky menu.

i used to live right by roberta's and always thought it was ridiculously overrated. did appreciate the BYOB thing though, is that still in effect?

Agreed. Check out the Frying Pan for a decent crowd with some good food and drink.

High Line Park area is nice too.

byob i think will always be in effect if you've poked your head in more than a few times, but they have a full liquor license now. i agree, of course it's overrated as a restaurant, apps are nomnomnom but their pizzas are the equivalent of an over-scarfed under-slept starving artist approaching your local american apparel babe thinking he's the next dash snow.

...wow i need to get out of here.

really didn't like pdt, thought the drinks sucked and the decor wasn't anything special. was expecting more, for some reason I thought it was like the #1 mixology place so maybe that's just me bitter about hyping it up.

Elsa is a pretty cool place for mixology.

Spending a month in new york later in the year, mostly likely spend 2 week in manhattan but looking to do a few weeks in the other boroughs (currently thinking brooklyn and the bronx) to experience a bit of the nyc outside manhattan. Any recommendations of where to stay (areas) in these boroughs?

You're better off doing a day trip to the Bronx

yeah, ummm, the Bronx isn't all that interesting. 98% of the interesting stuff to do/see/experience in NYC is in Manhattan or Brooklyn. If you're married to the idea of staying in a 3rd borough, there's some stuff around PS1 in Queens that I hear is interesting, but others can probably direct you better.

+1 to sushi samba being a pretty bad place to eat. have been there a few times and each time the service was pretty bad and i didnt like the ambiance. (i know it's supposed to have a fun, hip, party feel to it but it's way too loud and the seating arrangements were poor).

i stopped there for a drink after a nice dinner at one if by land, two if by sea and hung out at the bar for a bit. no complaints. i'll probably limited any future visits to drinks only. so many better places in NYC for sushi (and some at a lower price point) it isnt even funny

i've only been to the bronx for yankees games. guess you could see the zoo and botanical gardens.

Arthur Avenue is also worth a look, as is City Island (although I'm not sure that's considered the Bronx).
