watching a Ron Carter documentary, and was reminded how broadly his influence reached
four fingers plucking bass lines on metal wires would become the back beat for the black sheep's head-bobbing hip-hop anthem

McCoy, Ron, and Elvin playing a Coltrane song
should probably post this in the jazz thread but here we are
can't get past the bass impressions in the middle that became the inspiration

edit: scrub to 2:50 if you want to start with the build up

curious how old you are fallaway
that george michael song has been a thing since i was in my teens well over thirty years ago
in fact, it's junior high dance soundtrack material from the early 80's
i'm sure i shuffled to this song without letting my hands move into the danger zone lest the chaperone rap my knuckles with a ruler
to each their own, physics and hormones be damned

Careless Whisper should be airbrushed out of history.

There are Meatloaf fans in England? I thought he was just a Texas thing.

Bat out of Hell spent 82 weeks on the Billboard 200, but 522 weeks on the UK album charts. Don't tell us about Meat Loaf. We liked him better than you did.

We traded him for Dr. Feelgood and the Toy Dolls.

The musical is a loose retelling of Peter Pan, set in post-apocalyptic Manhattan (now named 'Obsidian'), and follows Strat, the forever young leader of 'The Lost' who has fallen in love with Raven, daughter of Falco, the tyrannical ruler of Obsidian.
So that's what it was about. It's good to hear live music played loud through a good sound system, at least.

met up with a few old buddies from my expat days and we went down a nostalgic trip of the old beijing bands we saw at cramped little clubs in the jing

joyside - beijing based indie band, played regular gigs and were part of all the main festivals

carsick cars - just like joyside another local band that was always playing shows from small festivals to big events

namewee & wang leehom - collaboration between an American (wang) who sings pop and a malaysian who raps who collaborated on this song about the stuggles of migrant workers in Beijing - real representative of the chinese diaspora as there are millions of native chinese speakers spread out throughout the world

pretty sure i played poker vs wang leehom as a few pop singers and actor would show up regularly to play and we had no idea who they were until after the left the local women at the tables would always be like "omg that's amazing i just played poker against a guy I had a poster of on my wall growing up"

jane zhang - finalist in a tv singing competition who went on to a huge career this is from her english album she worked with timbaland on and the video is just such a treat

she is from sichuan and has a very typical sichuan look

g.e.m. reminds me of the late 90s power pop ballads that dominated radio growing up

teresa teng - old school pop, always felt like this song could really benefit from getting rebooted as a non pop song

song about beijing natives - kid was like 14 at the time, sold the rights to be used in video games and commercials and then just basically retired lviing off royalities iirc

Sun Yanzi - this is just a great karaoke song

wu bai & china blue - one of the more respected pioneering rock bands but i've never quite understood the hype - this song is alright though

cui jian - played his stuff here before and will do it again, he is considered the first non-pop singer to make it big in asia, even traveled to tiananmen and performed during those protests
here's audio of his performance at the square

here's a song of his i like that i don't think i've shared here

Teresa Teng's whole catalog bears careful listening. She recorded multiple genres in multiple languages.

the only time that I know about where Jose revealed his full face to the audience - maybe he felt it was a very special thing because this Orchestra invited him to play with them
his vocals are so very, very strong - at 3:00 his sings in Spanish

I saw him in concert at my college. I was shocked that he didn't rock himself off his stool. He was very energetic for a guy sitting in one place.
