Watched Enter the Void then came here to see if everyone else thought it was terrible.

Really wish I'd done those two in reverse.

You need to see what the resolution will be. I'm not go into details about the end of the film, but I think the climax is done very well. It does exactly what it needs to do and I don't think there could be a better way to handle it.
the booth scene is one of the most emotionally powerful ever caught on film.

It's not terrible, it is totally unwatchable. It is the cinematic equivalent of Alcatraz's famous "hole".

I can't believe Ive never seen this film before Last Night.

RocknRolla

Guy Ritchie writing and directing. Its another British Gangster film with some well known actors such as Gerard Butler, Jeremy Piven and Idris Elba among others. Was pretty enjoyable.

Some really funny scenes.

Was this a well known film because Id never heard about it before?

Is there a reason why Animated Feature and Make-up only have 3 nominations? The fact that Best Picture is 10 nominations again sets a precedence that they don't have a problem with nominating things to add to marketing even if they might not deserve to be there.

meh...no real surprises. Glad to see John Hawkes get a nom, tho. Nolan not getting a directing nod is ridiculous.

Dom,

The new edition of the film book I use has an analysis of The Prestige in the chapter on sound. Although I usually show A Man Escaped, something by Tati, or The Conversation, do you think this would be a good one to show in class? I haven't seen it.
01-25-2011 , 03:51 PM
Hmmm...I really like the movie, but I'v never thought of the sound design in it...that must mean it worked!

Yeah, I think that would be a good film to use. Blade Runner is another, of course.

Lawrence of Arabia is an excellent one for sound analysis too.

DB,

I have to contend with the class time, which is only two and a half hours. That, and bladder time, too. Too bad, since that keep me from showing Lawrence of Arabia and Magnolia, two I'd love to show to a class.

I think I'd use Blade Runner to illustrate mis-en-scene, though, but perhaps I haven't studied the movie's sound design enough.

I watched Nolan's Insomnia the other night, and the sound is terrific in that one too, but I have the feeling the original is much better for some reason.

You mean you show films in class, sort of like a gym teacher filling in as a substitute?

The original is indeed much better.

I'd love to hear about you doing sound design on Eraserhead with your class, JC
01-25-2011 , 06:04 PM
Have you listened to the uncompressed version of the movie Sunshine?

it's quite good.
01-25-2011 , 06:56 PM
Dogtooth - Uhm, erm. Well okay. Imagine if Lars von Trier remade M Night Shyamalan's The Village and you're on the right track. There are some amusing scenes, but too weird for me. 5/10

The Young Victoria has some gorgeous costumes, set design, all the peripheral stuff is excellent but the characters failed to engage me. Just seems like an excuse to make a lavish period piece. 7/10

Count Yorga, Vampire sucks. Basically. 3/10

Raising Victor Vargas follows this libidinous young man searching for love and dealing with his siblings and frustrated grandmother trying to take care of them all. I liked it quite a bit, would recommend. 8/10

Jonah Hex isn't as bad as I expected, they must've edited the hell out of it because essential parts of the story seem to be missing. Nevertheless, it's occasionally entertaining. 5/10
