Sunshine (2007) by Danny Boyle

Pretty entertaining. Not without its flaws and formulaic compromises. But still, there's originality and a compelling plot that goes wherever it wants as the movie progresses. Mild recommendation for sci-fi/thriller space movie.

7/10

Sunshine breaks my heart. A beautiful, lyrical, visually stunning movie for an hour and a half that goes totally to pieces in the final 15 minutes. At least it gets the final voiceover and final shots right, but the previous segment of the movie has done the damage by that point. I still the movie, but it should be a masterpiece!!

yeah the last part was pretty.... interesting to say the least

Rewatched Million Dollar Baby for the first time in years, possibly since I saw it originally. Liked it as much as when I saw it back then.

Rewatched Citizen X the other day. Fantastic movie based on the Andrei Chikatilo case. Highly recommended.

Netflix instant-watch unwatchable now. I get at most ten minutes of watching before 10 to 15 minutes of loading time. Probably my cable provider, though Netflix is a well-established throttler of physical media. Bummer, used to watch a movie most every day.

Big Fan was pretty good. What I felt was a pretty realistic portrayal of the extremist die-hard sports fan. Depressing in that portrayal too when you see how wholly it consumes him.

Zombieland was a fun watch, a Shaun-of-the-Dead type humorous take on the zombie genre. I personally can't stand most of the newer Romero or various other zombie films so I like the ends of the spectrum: these kinds of films, and then the 28 Days Later type films.

Talking of zombies, I just started playiing an XBox game called 'Dead Rising'. Basically it's a game version of the original Dawn of the Dead, you run through a shopping mall killing zombies with whatever you can find. Flying V guitar, brooms, baseball bats, dumbells. It's freakin fun. The sequel is out soon, and instead of a mall, it's a city like Vegas

The Messenger - decent indie flick with Ben Foster, Woody Harrelson and Samantha Morton, about military guys who notify the next of kin when a soldier dies. Good performances.

Eat. Pray. Love. - Girl I'm dating wanted to see it, so I went. Damn, it was actually pretty good. Made me think, choked me up a little, sweet little flick. Surprisingly, I definitely recommend it.

You sure do know how to pick 'em.

I don't get the hate for Greenberg on here, I really liked it.

Anyways, watched Date Night and it was not all that good, but some funny scenes. Fey's "that's amazing, Jeremy"-thing was hilarious.

I remember my roommate having this game. It was pretty fun mindlessly killing zombies, however I couldn't read any of the text. It was too small.

Hey, she went with me to see Exit through the Gift Shop, so it was her turn to pick the flick. Fair's fair.

Killer of sheep

Stan is a middle-aged man who works in a slaughter house. His suffering from depression and insomnia but forcing himself to get up and work and strive to bring up his family. It paints a pretty bleak picture of life in the ghetto and the strain that raising a family on the edge of poverty puts a man under.

The films told through a number of vignettes. We follow people as they go about their lives. I think all the people we meet have some connection with Stan and gradually a lose narrative emerges.
It's sometimes beautiful, sometimes bizarre, with a story that's simple but interesting. sadly I did lose quite a bit of the plot because a lot of the characters mumble in thick accents and the sound qualities not great.

Went to see Salt last night. Just a completely ridiculous film with insane plot twists every five minutes. Enjoyable action none the less and Jolie looks great. Although I'm surprised that some have compared it the Bourne series, just no way as good.

Salt is an abomination of a movie.

The Other Guys

This gets a 2/10, and only gets the two points for making an effort at non-traditional humor that might have been funny had it been written better. I might have laughed twice. I was actually uncomfortable at points, it was so very much not funny. I felt like leaving. At one point, I realized I had no idea where the inane plot was, and I realized that it was because I had been thinking about my golf swing for the previous fifteen minutes.

After leaving, I was glad it was over, and that I had left.

Corrina, Corrina

One of my favorite films. Set in the late 50s, the story focuses on a father grieving over the recent loss of his wife. He grieves by shutting himself off from talking about his dead wife, and his little girl grieves by shutting herself out completely. She won't speak.

After some funny interviews to hire a maid-- one that includes a closet alcoholic, played by Joan Cusak, that starts off okay but goes plenty downhill in moments-- the dad hires Corrina, played by Whoopi Goldberg. After deciding he doesn't want to hire a smartmouthed black woman, the dad decides to hire her anyway because she's the only one capable of drawing out his daughter, and maybe him, too.

It's a sweet little romantic story, and I love that despite being a kids movie it examines interracial dating, and death and the afterlife. Corrina is a firm believer in the power of hope, perhaps even if it's a lie. These bigger issues, however, are the movie's one downfall. Perhaps it's because the film is meant to be a kids movie. For that genre, it takes a decent look at interracial dating. But I'd have liked it if the film went a little deeper into consequences other than general disagreement from family and the neighborhood. And I'd have liked to get a little more into the father's reasons for being an atheist since later, during an emotional crisis, he has a spiritual conversion that's touching but, upon reflection, a little baffling.

Sunshine is one of my favorite movies and I don't think the 3rd act is in any way weak or deviates from the themes presented throughout the movie. I also know that a LOT of people disagree with me

Did Ray Liotta have to kiss Whoopi Goldberg? That must have been more startling than the end of the maze game video.

Not sure. They may have used some movie magic. All of the shots were done from an angle that prevents you from seeing any specific mouth to mouth action.
