I think one of you 365 movies/year people need to step up, take one for the team, and watch microbet's link.

The movie I'm most looking forward to this year is THE LEGO MOVIE!

watched Borgman.

"A vagrant enters the lives of an arrogant upper-class family, turning their lives into a psychological nightmare in the process."

a dutch movie. normally i dislike dutch film/tv but this plot synopsis made me have a go at this one. quite a thrilling, intense and dark film with a load of wtf moments and some very funny parts as well.

would recomend

2014 is the year of potentially great sequels, Planet of the Apes,Xmen First Class, Spider man plus the sequel to probably the best choreographed fight movie of all time THE RAID.

No Dredd 2 though. The world is a terrible place.

My kids have really been into Japanese anime (and music) for a few years and always watch subbed. it's really cool that they have picked up a lot of Japanese. The 14yo can have basic conversations.

Just saw Rush, surprised there hasn't been more chatter about it. It's a pretty gripping account of the rivalry between two F1 racers in the 1970's, and for something based so closely on reality still manages to weave a pretty compelling narrative arc.

I also liked how both of the main characters started out as cliche'd hollywood archetypes, but then actually proved to be more complex, and I really appreciated their relationship.

Extraterrestre (Spain)

Basically a guy and a girl wake up in the same apartment after a heavy night of drinking to find out there are UFOs, and everyone's been evacuated. Complicating things is the girl's bf and her next door neighbor.

5/10

It's supposed to be a quirky comedy but it didn't grab me like Don't Tempt Me . The acting was alright but plot was disjointed. I found my attention wandering off.

Americano (France)

French guy finds out his mother died and goes back to America to learn about the mother he never knew.

Pros: Selma Hayak still looks stripping down to her undies at whatever age she is now.

Cons: The movie. Seems like the writer, director, and star heard that Selma wanted to strip down so he wrote a movie on the fly. People do thinks for inexplicable reasons and the ending didn't make sense.

3/10

I'm on a string of bad movies.

I can't think of a better reason to write a movie.

Many years ago I was a big fan of the Disney animated films and so when Pocahontas came out I went to see it in the movies. By myself. To a weekday matinee. The audience consisted of approx 5-7 moms, their young kids, and me. If you ever want to know what a suspected pedophile feels like, I recommend trying my approach.

In some ways, sure.

But I also think that I like the idea of being with someone who constantly is making me want to improve as a person. Or that I'm still evolving with her. And that's kind of what happens with Samantha. Too much so obviously, but still.

i generally have no qualms about going to the movies alone, but this might be even more horrifying than i can handle.

watched The Great Beauty last night , was kind of intrigued that it beat out Blue is the Warmest Color for besf foreign movie at the Golden Globes so i checked it out and my god what a feast for the eyes . From start to finish just incredible cinematography , i was in awe at how beautiful the movie was . Every shot was well thought out and there isnt a wasted shot in the movie . Its definitely fellini-esque , and could probably pass as a modern version of la dolce vita . ....my only gripe is that it kind of loses some of its magic towards the end and starts to feel a bit bloated , but still a beautiful movie

Saw Lone Survivor last night. Having read the book years ago, I wasn't expecting a lot, but as a war movie it was pretty good. The intro credits were really good, and in the action scenes I never was confused on where everyone was and what they were doing.
The letdown was the ending that followed the cliché action movies endings instead of the more interesting, though probably more difficult to film interestingly, ending in the book.
This is where we significantly differ. I don't see Theodore's character as evolving at all through his interaction with Samantha. He becomes less depressed and gets out of his house more, sure, but that's not really a change in character. That's more a change in his state of mind.

I mean I guess. But I sort of see that as an evolution of character. I know people who seem down all of the time. Their state of mind is pretty synonymous with their character.

Having someone come into your life and pull you out of that can help you evolve into something new.

I see Theo as having three distinct personalities (characters, I guess) throughout the movie.

If we differ in that regard, so be it. I would imagine we won't see it similar through any amount of discussion.

I honestly didn't think Blind Date or Catherine were weird or awkward. After reading that, I wonder if most people see it that way. I definitely didn't. I didn't have a negative judgment for either of them.
01-14-2014 , 06:48 PM
I agree 100% Solo. I actually felt for Blind Date more than Theodore in that scene. Catherine to a lesser extent, but I still understood where she was coming from and I think most of my siding with Theo came from having seen his relationship with Samantha. I also felt that several of the "questions" which that reviewer felt weren't answered were answered so fully in the film that I'm left wondering if they actually watched the same movie.

True...but I think it's interesting to hear your viewpoint regardless of whether we agree or not.
