Movies: Talk About What You've Seen Lately--Part 3 Movies: Talk About What You've Seen Lately--Part 3

Never saw The Hobbit and never will but they are making a 310 page book into a 540 minute film. That 1.7 minutes/page. It takes longer to watch the film than read the novel.

It literally can't be any good.

Yeah, i think everyone is universally in agreement that attempting to do it in trilogy ala Lord of the Rings was really bad for the movie and just a money grab.

Could have been 1 long epic movie or 2 normal sized movies, instead you get 3 movies that drag, all to sell some extra tickets.

Old man Clovis fell off his rocker again!

The Hobbit and LOTR books are very different in style, so I'm okay with the movies having a different vibe. I would recommend the 70s animated version of The Hobbit if you want a one-movie version that stays true to the book.

Also, if you liked The Othrr Guys, you ought to give Anchorman a shot IMO.

The Hobbit is full of drama... melodrama.

The hobbit is as close to an anti-Clovis film I can think of; all cgi, for kids and a fantasy.

+1 million

I am not a big fan at all. I hated Anchorman and Stepbrothers and just think he's generally way overrated.

stepbrothers was an abortion.
anchorman and taladega nights were elite.

Watched Sightseers on netflix. It's an extremely dark comedy, which I liked a lot. It even made me cringe a bit which usually never happens. The main characters are pretty deranged and at times were annoying and unlikable, but that's obv by design. It almost like a twisted parody of a Mike Leigh movie. Overall I loved it, though.

Dredd - violent, dark, action packed. I'm going to call this overlooked because I've never heard anybody IRL admit to seeing it. It's definitely not the Stallone version, which is a good thing. Pleasantly surprised. 6/10

I liked it. I'd even probably give it a higher rating than 6/10.

Wicked flick, eh? Ben Wheatley is a mad scientist. He's all over the place with the four films he directed. Down Terrace is on Netflix as well, it's ****ing hilarious.

Yeah it was pretty nutty. I look forward to watching Down Terrace

Yeah - it's not really my favorite genre but if I was rating it solely against action shoot'em ups then it'd probably be 9/10.

I think the movie very successfully moved the delta of the story from Dredd to Anderson.

I would have to say that there could be a successful story for the next movie based on the respect those two have for each other.

yeah I saw it. It helped that I had not seen the original and only knew a minimal amount about it (basically a guy was locked in a room for many years for reasons unknown and then is released is all I knew) so the remake wasn't spoiled for me going into it. From what I've heard, the remake more or less follows the same plot line as the original but the original did many things better so there is really no reason to see the remake if you've seen the original.

As to Spike Lee's version on it's own, the best thing about it is I had no idea where the movie was going until it gets there - you will have no idea what the "big picture" is even if you've seen the trailers. And the movie looks good I guess and Josh Brolin is pretty good as the former Ahole trying to get things square after he gets released. But there are some things that happen that almost seem like they were unintentionally ridiculous/funny which definitely take away from the movie. I would give the remake 6/10 on it's own, avoid it if you've seen the original.

Thx. Pretty hard to compete with the original, by all means. But was expecting more from Spike Lee... Will watch out of curiosity, but I guess I will pressure people into watching the Korean version, for it is one of my favs of all time (even though I only discovered it this year).

The only Spike Lee movies I've seen are Malcolm X and He Got Game. Any movies of his that I should definitely watch? I feel like he's known for being a good director but not necessarily for any individual movies.

Summer of Sam is huge and while Spike Lee can too often be pinned to black cinema, really enjoyed the 25th Hour with Edward Norton portraying the last day of a free man before going to jail. Inside Man was an entertaining bank robbery movie. So yeah, with Malcolm X, those are my favorite Spike Lee joints.

Come on. Any Spike Lee discussion begins and ends with Do the Right Thing. It's a masterpiece.
