I was a little mad at her after passengers. She won me back though.

That wasn’t Anne Hathaway

Star trek: the motion picture is pure science fiction wrapped in a transcendent love story.
Surely the construction of the movie has faults, but it's a great movie experience.

I like the Jackie Chan movie with the Nazi's...

Passengers was a Chris Pratt/Jennifer Lawrence sci-fi from last year

Condor. Me, too. It's also one of the most surreal.

I thought this one was pretty good. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2674430...nm_flmg_act_13

A Quiet Place was entertaining, but also so dumb that it insults the viewer. Movies like this partially rely on world building, which means circumstances have to be somewhat plausible or explained and they are not. I'm surprised it has gotten so much legitimate praise.

We have our lil spats in the past but we always come back over Burn After Reading and Bourne.

There's so much more to write about BAR than what I wrote there (haven't seen it since). The 15 second scene of Malkovich's (I don't even know if we see him there) Ivy League club reunion, shot in a dreamlike ominous way with them singing an old fight song. The implication in a serious movie would be some sort of underground Ivy League control of everything, but here it's simply nothing and is never touched on again, because everyone is just an idiot and we're filming them as if something important is going on.

I'm mad af about the irl Russia stuff because now when I finally get to see this in a screening at a theater, the stuff with "the Russians" is going to get the wrong type of attention.

Spoiler:
like, you didn't realize you could shoot these things? Or that geez, perhaps the solution to beating them is somehow noise related? I'd think society would have figured that out pretty quick.

Closest comparable was Signs, for me. Similar spirit.
Spoiler:
Seems reasonable to me that too many people/institutions were overwhelmed too quickly to have had a chance to start experimenting with different frequencies. It also may well have been discovered elsewhere in the world.

Ugh the old "I don't care about the characters" nonsense. This is a cliched excuse. The movie didn't work for you and that's fine, but I absolutely guarantee you that putting flashbacks of them being a lovely family eating peanut butter sandwiches one stormy Saturday before the world ended would not have changed your opinion of it.

And now there will be a part 2, maybe they can stretch it to 95 minutes.
Most movies would be better if they were shorter. Length isn't the problem if you didn't like it.

I always thought Star Trek: The Motion Picture needed to announce itself as something different, something more serious than a mere TV show. "The Motion Picture" attempted to do that by using an already archaic phrase in the subtitle. If the movie failed, it failed because it was too serious.

I've got one for you that meets both criteria: Forbidden Planet from 1956. It's a classic that is loosely based on Shakespeare's The Temptest. I'm a sci-fi geek and that is one of my favorite films. In fact, I'm pretty sure I listed it as my favorite film of 1956 in the old thread about favorite movies from every year since you were born.

It was one of the first, if not the first, sci-fi movies that had A list stars and was given a large budget. It's also the first movie where people from Earth are in a flying saucer headed to another planet, rather than aliens in flying saucers coming to Earth. In addition to the story, the special effects are phenomenal for its time. It's other claim to fame is that it is purportedly the movie that inspired Gene Roddenberry to create Star Trek.

As for your second category, I came across an interesting documentary about the movie on YouTube a few years ago. I'll embed the first part of the documentary below, but I would suggest that you only watch a few minutes of it to get a flavor for the movie, and then if you're interested (and I don't know why you wouldn't be), watch the movie first before watching the rest of the documentary.

From Forbidden Planet:

Spoiler:
"You oughta see my new mind.... up there in lights, bigger than his now.... Morbius was too close to the problem, the Krell had completed their project... their big machine... no instrumentalities... true creation... but the Krell forgot one thing... monsters, John... monsters from the ID."

You might want to put spoil tags on that before RBK sees it. Why ruin the ending for him?

What a great sci fi film that was and still is. Great sound effects and a really great storyline and the fetching Anne Francis. Even with the highly advanced CGI of today you could not remake it to be any better.

Forbidden Planet is truly amazing. Probably the first movie I saw as a kid that gave me adult sci-fi ideas about what could be...really, the reason why I became such a huge science fiction fan.

And this is on my wall:

Oops, but now I've screwed up by quoting your original post and it's too late for me to edit and put in spoil tags of my own.

Forbidden Planet was Robbie the Robot's big breakout role!

The turbo tits on the blonde babe is what makes the poster.
