A Quite Place, John Krasinski, 2018

This is one effective horror movie. Tight, moving, and scary as ****, Krasinksi and his co-writers have fashioned the best horror movie I've seen since It Follows. The gimmick works and makes complete sense, There are no cheap scares or convenient plot points. We live with this family and like them.

There's a sequence in this film that is one of the scariest, butt-clenching sequences I've ever seen. Let's just say that it's hard to deliver a baby by yourself when there are creatures hunting you by sound!

Oh, and the creatures...excellent monster work by the SFX guys...they are unique and alien and like nothing you've seen before.

Great, great, genre flick.

Two questions, feel free to put answers in spoilers if you think it's appropriate:

1) By cheap scares, are you saying there are no instances of the movie trying to startle the viewer (almost invariably with some loud violin stinger)?

2) Is there a pregnant woman in the movie?

I think there is one instant of a cheap scare. But it’s a good one lol

....maybe.

Spoiler:
1. Sure. Leto is a cyborg (he has drones that act as his eyes), but is human. The replicants are essentially androids.

I can't even remember, that plot did get a bit twisty, as all good noir stories do.

I fell into a rabbit hole reading about BR2049 on the internets and found this:

Quote:
Late singer David Bowie was the original choice to play Niander Wallace, but he passed away before the pre-production of Blade Runner 2049 began, allowing Jared Leto to be cast as Wallace.
We missed a golden opportunity.

somigosaden / everyone,

i saw a quiet place today also.

it depends how you define 'cheap scares'. there are actually quite a few jump scares, but from memory they all take place during scenes where you would be on edge anyway. and they aren't that bad.

overall, the movie wasn't as scary / tense as i was expecting. it's no picnic, but 10 cloverfield lane 'got me' wayyyyy worse. i think for most people, your standard haunted house horror movie is going to be much more intense than this.

great movie though, highly recommend.

Scares are like Pratfalls... while momentarily exhilarating, ultimately yawn.

I played a cool video game recently where you’re an android fighting on Earth at the orders of humans on a moon base. Except you start to realize that your commanders are androids and you’ve actually never seen a human. Was just wondering if BR 2049 was far enough in the future that the androids had phased out the humans since I don’t remember much evidence of their existence.

A Quiet Place was fantastic. Holy **** that ending!

I could nitpick a few things about it, but ultimately it was very good and I'm excited to see what John Krasinski does next.

Paterno came on HBO last night. Did not like.

It wasn't boring, I watched it through. But at the end, I didn't feel as if it added any insights. Just kind of rehashed the story that was already out there.

I just watched We Need to Talk About Kevin because I read good reviews about Lynne Ramsay's new Joaquin Phoenix movie and was curious about her. Tilda Swinton is apparently an adventurous free-spirit cosmopolitan hippie type who semi-settles down and has a bad seed son. This kid is a handful and a half, charming little Kevin, and things get messy. There's some very dark humor in this but it's mostly pretty bleak. It's a powerful movie with important themes: the individual vs. society, redemption etc. Great movie! And Swinton is a marvel to behold, she totally owns this.

I did not think The Last Jedi was very good. At all. Pretty damn bad, actually.

Looking at The Space Odyssey ticket, do they say 'f***' in there once if they make the movie today to avoid the G rating?

My god. Blockers is insanely good. Heartful and hilarious. Perfectly plotted. The script, direction, and acting are so good.

If I knew someone could only see The Quiet Place or Blockers, I think I'd say Blockers. I would watch it again right now.

I was going to point out a kids movie from the 90s that was rated G and said **** once near the end. But I can't remember what it's called. I thought it was Andre, but that's not right. It was about a pudgy young teen male who finally stands up for himself. I think. Been over 20 years

The Titan

3/10

Netflix movie. Earth is dying so a few special soldiers embark on a special top secret experiment to evolve them to live on Titan, an inhospitable moon.

Boring, incoherent, dull. The first half is your standard body horror "oh no we're changing into something new!" The second half is supposed to be the horror/thriller part. But it's not really. It took 5 seconds to be interesting and then reverted to the guy running the experiments is the bad guy plot. ZZZZzzzzZZZZZZ

That is insane. The preview looked awful.

I dunno, Cena has pretty good comedy chops IYAM. I'm a bit sad we went and saw Game Night and could have waited a week for Blockers which I think I'd enjoy more.

This is hilarious, I was just thinking about which one to see tonight and now I'm thinking of making it a double header

An amazing little low budget short staring franko nero as a conflicted sheriff of a small town charged to find two killers.

It exhibits all the European (specially Italian) sensibilities and ability to weave a story into a wonderful moral dilemma way beyond any yarn produced here in the west in recent times.

To me, the preview made it look like a standard but competent raunchy comedy. But it is surprisingly well written and heartfelt. There's one particular relationship arc that had me almost jumping out of my seat.

I'm curious to know how this plays for teens. I'll admit I watched the movie from the POV of the parents.

Exactly. Cena kills it. He is like Dwayne Johnson. Not a huge range, but he's very good at what he does.

You know you can see more than one movie

Did you see it HTG?

2 guns is a solid action/comedy flick. Re-watchable with a long time in between imo.
