Movies: Talk About What You've Seen Lately--Part 3 Movies: Talk About What You've Seen Lately--Part 3

2049 is not better than the original... but it's certainly more accomplished and stunningly made... MORE THAN a worthy successor. The original asks more pertinent question of viewers IMHO.

The tendencies for movie goers are to whittle away at things so that you feel empowered... this take the form of "Critique". frankly, it's rather tiresome to hear about ideas on what is "wrong" with film as a prelude to what is "right" with a film... there is so much that is right with this movie.

Listening to the yet to be released soundtrack right now at home... it's so good!

So hyped to see BR2049 next weekend. Blade Runner is probably my favorite sci-fi movie ever.

BR2049

Spoiler:
I think one of the most important achievements of the movie are in its characters, specifically Gosling as Kay. It's clear from the beginning that Kay is unsatisfied with what he is and what he does, he wants greater purpose than that of an assassin. He believes he finds this when he becomes almost certain that he is the miracle replicant who was actually born. This gives his life meaning, it gives it purpose. When the rug is pulled out from under him, and not in a GOTCHA way, he is almost back where he started. Like most people, he's not special or different. So he had a choice, he could fade away and dwell on the fact that he is just another creation, or act and make the best of what he has. He may not be the chosen one, but saving Deckard, reuniting him with his daughter, and potentially kickstarting a revolution, gives his life purpose. I think most of us can relate to wanting to live a life that means something, and ultimately we are defined by our choices.

You combine that with astounding visuals and a great score, I don't see how this isn't one of, if not the best, movies of the year

Going to see BR2049 and actually my expectations aren't *that* high. Nonetheless I'm limiting myself to one or two swallows of water at lunch to avoid having to pee during the movie.

Watched Wild at Heart for the first time in about 20 years.

This does not work. At all.

BR2049 was pretty good. That's all - pretty good.

The scene with Ana de Armas could have gone a lot longer. Is there a director's cut on that one?

Add me to the list who's seen Bladerunner 2049 Imax. Great visual and auditory spectacle. I could write plenty about that alone but will stay brief. Never seen so much rain and water and so much holography. Harrison Ford looked like he just skipped the wardrobe and makeup department and walked directly out from lounging at his home onto the movie set. Movie could have a better script. I love all versions of the original Bladerunner. 2049 was worth watching.

Blade Runner 2049 was good, but not great. The best part was the cinematography. Wow, it's the best looking movie I've seen in years. The biggest disappointment was the music. Nothing came even close to the hauntingly beautiful synths of Vangelis.

The story is a bit disjointed. The most interesting part of the whole movie was the relationship between K and his girlfriend. There weren't too many other good characters. Wallace is the new Tyrell. He has a replicant that reminds me of the terminator from Terminator 3. Edward James Olmos has a fan service-y cameo as Gaff. Harrison Ford literally looks like they didn't bother to do any wardrobe on him. He wears blue jeans and a grey t shirt the whole time and he doesn't really have much to do or say the entire movie.

Philosophically it also disappoints. Aside from the relationship between K and his holo-girlfriend, I didn't really find much to ruminate about. I thought the anime short they did was better than this and the two other prequel shorts they made were decent as well. It's definitely worth a viewing if you are a Blade Runner fan, just keep your expectations in check.

Don't listen to the guys saying 2049 isn't great. It is great. By far, the best film of the year so far. It is a worthy successor and better than I ever had hoped for.

I will write a real review after I see it for a second time.

But see it in IMAX. The music and sound are astounding.

Sorry to hear this. I was one of the three people who liked it when it came out. Some movies just don't age well.

I saw "A Boy and his Dog" the other day. It was sorta OK, but not the great film I thought it was in the 70s.

I have a hard time articulating exactly why I love it so much. Something about those people and the will to conquer the mountain resonates with me despite my crippling fear of heights.
If you enjoyed Everest I recommend
Touching The Void http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0379557/

and North Face http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0844457/?ref_=nv_sr_3

Both great mountaineering movies based on true stories.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales: the only excuse I have for this is that I was on a long plane ride with limited selections. Brenton Thwaites plays the exact same flippant character he played in Gods of Egpyt, and ruins this movie the exact same way. Kaya Scodelario also does a horrible job, but lucky for her Thwaites is just such a bad actor that it's hard to blame anyone else. He's the T:G Emilia Clarke of the movie. As almost everything about this movie was objectively terrible (the scene with "young" Johnny Depp was physically painful to watch), it's easy to point out the only three things that weren't - the zombie sharks were fantastic, Javier Bardem hammed it up wonderfully, and Golshifteh Farahani stole every scene she was in. Would still have preferred to just stare at the flight tracker the entire time in retrospect.

The Big Sick: caught this on the same flight. Better than the flight tracker. That joke everyone loves is really old and well known. The fast food drive thru scene was overkill. Holly Hunter knocked this one out of the park.

Blade Runner 2049

Acceptable sequel to the original, holding the look, feel and tone of the first one. Some good scifi ideas too. However, I don't think there's any really great scenes, but it is a series of (sometimes really) good ones - and no bad.

4/5

Knew this was coming as soon as I read Gioco's post.

I'm not going to see it, cause frankly, Blade Runner sucked.

Had a few visuals, a decent story, but also had that "aren't these questions profound?" feel to it.

Maybe that came out more over the years, I dunno.

Not my thing.

2049 was really, really awesome

Obviously not as ground breaking as the first, but did a good job of paying homage while still being it's own stand alone film

Unsurprisingly Josh Brolin and Jake Gyllenhall crush their roles. I read some complaints about them being underused and the cast over-crowded, but I thought that fit with some of the themes and mood of the movie.

The third act was way more emotional than I was prepared for, but I thought they handled it very well. I'd recommend this to anyone and it's a must see if the subject matter appeals.
I agree that it’s a fascinating story and the movie delivers. I got really into this story a few months back. Glad they made this movie about it.

I thought Gyllenhall failed to deliver as Scott Fischer. For one he looked nothing like him, and from the limited amount of videos I’ve seen of Scott Fischer, well Gyllenhall also speaks nothing like him. Fischer’s wife apparently had the same opinion and didn’t like the character they came up with. IMO they just came up with their own character of a hippie mountain climber. “Ewwww eeeee”

I thought Jason Clarke (I had honestly never even heard of him before this) crushed it as Rob Hall

Its hard for me to come up with another film in the genre that is much better than BR 2049. I liked the original but never was a huge fan. The original felt more of a film noir with sci fi elements as opposed to 2049 which felt like a sci fi with film noir elements.

BR actually reminded me more of GITS 1995, which is arguably my favorite film in the philosophical robot genre.

If there is one flaw I can think of, its that BR 2049's villain's motivation is not really believable. I had to do a lot of thinking to come to this conclusion though so its a thought provoker. The Gosling/de Armas relationship also brings a fresh take to the genre and thats a rare thing to see these days.

Haha yeh I kept thinking, when did Jim Jeffries learn how to act? I should have mentioned him initially - fantastic performance, would like to see more of him.

Interesting about Gyllenhall as Fischer. I did not know anything about the real life version and it's disappointing they missed the mark so badly. He still fits into the movie, but I guess a little less so now.

could someone put in spoilers what the difference is between the true cut and the original bladerunner?

Just so good.
That one is amazing. I may watch that tonight.

not really but why would you do this?
What if you didn't like the original at all? Would 2049 be appealing?

Wolf of Wallstreet

Yeah, I know I'm very late for this one. I love Scorsese films and this was pretty good as well. But my goodness, did it really have to be 3 hours long? It took me 4 sittings to get through it.

Even though I thought it was pretty good, it felt like there wasn't really much story going on. There was endless party then there was something about FBI, and then it ends. It really didn't feel like it went anywhere. I think that, due the length, the ending felt super-rushed, glossing over some details. Was this guy a bad person, a good person, someone with redemption, what? I'd put this one down there with Gangs of New York for Scorsese. Not great, not bad.

I think it's the best scene in the movie. And maybe the kiss that gets stopped.

lol interesting...that was probably my least favorite scene in the movie! Still loved it, though.
