I typically despise hypothetical's, but i have been thinking about this for some reason.

Take your ultimate grail watch, and i think for most it would be a watch that you will never realistically own in your life, and while that may change over time, i think part of what makes a grail is a heightened level of un-attainability while still remaining whimsically fathomable at some point in your life. Mine would be

Now, if you ever made it to the point where you could actually have that grail, would you actually buy it, or would you instead buy x number of other really incredible watches. For example i could have my grail or say:

and

and

and

and

and still have some left over.

would you take the grail, or a whole collection of great pieces?

obv go for the grail, what's wrong with you ? if its a hypothetical, ball out of control of course !!!

I'd prefer multiple. Then you're not so worried about what will happen to one and scared to wear it out, and you'll have more for different occasions and outfits. I'd get the Glashutte PML too, and a JLC MUT, Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra 15,000 Gauss and a Tudor Heritage Black Bay.

Yeah if someone gave me 20 grand and told me I had I spend it on watches, I would probably buy about four.

I don't think this is possible.

The problem with me, and I think most other men who are into watches is that one is never enough. I feel like if I got the Grail then I would soon starting wanting another, only now my taste will probably be another level up.

pretty sure if I could comfortably afford an ALS I'd just end up doing one of those watch rental programs. There are about 600 watches I'd like to own for a few months.

Thabighurt, since your grail is a chronograph and none of the watches in your 5 watch collection is a chronograph, that means subconsciously you're going to go for the grail at a later point after acquiring the 5.

By the way, I love every one of those 5. Personally I prefer the AP 15202 over the AP 15400 and probably take a GS hi-beat GMT over the Snowflake but that'll approach blowing the grail budget.

Well, I think i left enough in there for a JLC MC Chrono....

Plus, idk of you ever really get to own a grail as whenever you buy your current one a new one would eventually surface.

I mean if i bought that up/down i would probably just want a 5970.

And yeah, the list was incomplete, i didnt take time to think out the ideal collection. but I would think it should include:

dress watch
dive watch
chrono
perpetual calendar
something unique
something innovative
sport watch

yea, i have been looking at the GS hi-beat GMT a lot lately, but i already have a 216570 for the GMT and the el primero for a high beat, which knocks out the chrono as well. Whatever the collection would be i think there would definitely be a GS in there and the snowflake takes truly elite dial work and combines it with an innovative movement and a titanium bracelet, at least that's what i was thinking of last night.

I'm looking for a weekender around the $50-100 range. The Seiko 5 looks perfect, but it's too small for me:

A similar watch that's 40mm and automatic would be great, and something more unique than Timex. Another huge plus would be no date function, but I know those are rare. Any suggestions?

This is my work watch for a couple of years now, though I'm going to switch the metal band for a leather strap next week.

I've been eyeing this Graf Zeppelin to alternate with the Vintage:

I love the look, too bad it's quartz.

It's 37mm. Both of the watches I own are 40, and I don't think anything smaller will fit me (IEL)

Trust me, it will fit. Try it for a week. I mean, it's $50, and you can flip it in like 20 seconds if you really don't like it.

I have the SNK809 (37mm) and while it's smaller than my other watches I got used to it.

I also like not having to worry about bashing a $50 watch.

If you just have to have something larger, the SNZG15 is 42mm, and it's $109.99 on Amazon.

I agree that the Seiko will be fine size wise so if you really like it then go for it. But if you insist on 40mm then a Vostok Amphibian would fit the bill pretty perfectly although I think most of them have date displays. They come with terrible bracelets, but just pick up a nato and it will still be well under $100. There are a bunch of dial options, check them out on Zenitar's ebay store: http://stores.ebay.com/zenitarstore/..._nkw=amphibian

Obligatory pic of mine:

Thumbs up on the Vostok. I have the Scuba Dude with a nato strap for surfing, but since I'm Russian I think it would be too much of a typecast to wear a russian watch.

I was still unsure what to buy, but had already decided it would be more prudent to not go crazy on my first watch purchase, and get something nice and solid in the cheaper range, when my girlfriend got me this Seiko SRP401J2, (4r36a movement) for my birthday. She had seen it on my shortlist.
