Well after giving him some recommendations along these lines, he sends me a text with this pic, lol. Guess he's moving up fast.

Says his jeweler is willing to give him a really good deal on it...but I've never been anywhere near being in the market for a watch in that price range, so does anyone know what a "really good" deal on this watch would actually be.

I think it makes a really smart dress watch, with a simple and uncluttered dial.

I have always admired JLC as a brand but have never owned one. I prefer round dials to rectangular so not really all that keen on a reverso.

Rookie here, but that's beautiful.

Can we request people adding prices? Or is that a no-no? I have no idea of the value of these watches and looking them up can be tough. Or is there an easy way to look watches up that I'm missing?

list price for jlc ultra thin moon phase is $9,650

jlc has prices on its website. for most other brands, you would need to look at sites like www.prestigetime.com or www.authenticwatches.com

This website lists retail prices for a range of watch brands (as well as having some other interesting stuff for horology fans). It is oriented more towards the high-end brands.

Is he going for that particular Submariner?

I would tell him to skip the two tone and go fora straight stainless steel version.

Yeah, I've hinted at that (and no date), but he seems pretty set on this particular one unfortunately. To each their own I guess. Any idea what a good price would be for it? Or does it depend on particulars that are unavailable in the pic? I often see references to serial numbers when looking for Sub prices, and from my internet searches, prices seem all over the map (and I thought Rolex had some pretty strict price enforcement).

the reason you see serial refs is that model (16613) has been produced for a long time in various iterations. the newest ones have ceramic bezels and command a big premium over the one in your picture which is a Y serial or older as indicated by the lug holes.

Depending on accessories id guess 4-5k is a fair price, but don't hold me to that number since i kinda dislike the two tone so i dont follow the market at all, this is just what i could dig up in 20 minutes of forum browsing.

edit: also lol at jumping from that quartz monstrosity to this

i believe two tone costs a bit more than that even with discount.. that being said, that particular two tone has been around for a long time and only really works in the 50+ demographic (perfect for your dad?).. i'm sure there are plenty of good "deals" to be had on that particular model..

your dad should fall in love with the watch, not the deal..

Yeah he is in his mid-60's so def the right demo for this style. And he is def the type of guy who values a good deal just as much or more than the actual product, lol. I'll be sure to try to reinforce that the watch itself is the most important thing, especially for this kinda money (which is a decent amount for him, especially considering he's not a big watch guy as evidenced by his initial choice lol).

just make sure its actually a good deal, and not someone saying 'this watch retails for 10k but you can have it for 7k!'. seemingly similar rolexes can be worth vastly different amounts depending on details, condition, provenance, etc. you need to compare apples to apples.

you really need to do your research with regards to older model rolexes.

Slight differences in the dial text/crown shape/crown guards will make big differences in pricing.

honestly this is one patek that just makes me go "meh". World time pieces like this usually just come off as overly cluttered and cumbersome.

Love the Patek world time, although I think I prefer it in white.

The dial on a world time is indeed generally very cluttered, but the idea that you need a watch capable of displaying two timezones because youre just soooooooooo international is delightfully pretentious.

My favourite world time right now has to be the Breguet. Big fan of the brand generally for their stunning dials and this one perhaps takes the cake. This is the "Americas" version. Also available in Europe/Africa and Asia.

Also like this one. Have come close to buying a couple of times.

What I don't like about it is it's a men's size watch with a ladies size time display.

I kinda like this GMT/perpetual callendar.

This is interesting if you want to keep track of tides and moon.
