Steely Dan is hard to beat. My top 5 SD albums:

1 Can't Buy A Thrill
2 The Royal Scam
3 Katy Lied
4 Pretzel Logic
5 Aja

I never really warmed up to Aja's chilly vibe back when it came out, despite its popularity.

Back in the summer of 2009 Steely Dan was in the midst of yet another summer tour. They were going to perform at the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal Studios. Since my better half and I are hard core Dan enthusiasts we wouldn't dream of missing this event. What made this " Rent Party Tour 09 " tour so unique was the fact that they would be playing a whole album from start to finish as a playlist. For instance, on August 21st they would start the show with the Aja album. On August 22nd, the show started with the Gaucho album. On August 24th , the show started with The Royal Scam album. For the last show on August 25th they decided to let the fans pick the playlist by internet. Once the band had finished playing the full album in order, they took a short break and came out and played an hours worth of other popular Steely Dan songs. Can't recall any other group of that era ( or this one ) ever playing sets like that. Needless to say, it was a memory that we will cherish for a long time.

Aja is just as perfect an album as you can get.

The duo reminisce about their life and music:

I'm not a music snob. There have been times that I've ridden in an elevator and listened to a Muzak interpretation of "Let It Be" and thought, "That's kinda catchy, and, what's more, it's letting a musician put food in her kids' mouths."

Even when a crime against humanity takes place -- something like the Black Crowes' cover of "Too Hard to Handle" -- I've never resorted to violence. Instead, I've taken the high road and thought, "Maybe they're paying off their bus driver with the proceeds. Maybe his kids will have lunch money now."

But somebody has to say it, Steely Dan was pure dreck.

Steely Dan is very divisive. I'm not on either extreme myself though. I like them, but I've never gone far out of my way to listen to them. I think I could get into them if I listened more though.

It's ok to be wrong, Phat. We all are wrong at some point in our lives.

Yeah, I watched that Aja documentary a couple years ago, very good. The one on FM's Rumours was also good, I remember.

I wasn't really that fond of Steely Dan until a Lounge thread about them in 2009 or so got me really listening to all the non-Aja albums again. The guy who started it is now a mod in SE, name starts with cw I think. I remember Kudzu saying that he'd played Haitian Divorce for his wife on their honeymoon.

I always liked the one song you hear on the radio that Donald Fagen didn't sing - "Dirty Work" - from their first album.

I like Midnight Cruiser from that album, the drummer sang that iirc. Sadly you never hear that on the radio anymore.

Don Williams just died at 78, very talented country singer-songwriter who had a bunch of hits back in the 70s and 80s. This is one of his best, about growing up as a modern Southern man and what that involves:

Aww, I just love this song! It was the first song I put on when I heard that he had died. Was listening to it today. He had such a soothing voice. So excited when I saw your post kioshk

The smell of cape jasmine thru the window screen
John R. and the Wolfman kept me company
By the light of the radio by my bed
With Thomas Wolfe whispering in my head

I can still hear the soft Southern winds in the live oak trees
And those Williams boys they still mean a lot to me
Hank and Tennessee
I guess we're all gonna be what we're gonna be
So what do you do with good ole boys like me

Thanks, Katy! Yeah, that's a good song. The classic country station I listen to plays it a lot.

Hmmm, unless they did a cover for the WSOP song, that was Big and Rich. Well, that was save a horse and ride a cowboy though.

The only Montgomery Gentry song that comes immediately to mind is My Town, it's ok. I think their career had been on a downswing recently.

Vincent and Joe Pesci were 'discovered' by De Niro who then told Scorsese about them, leading to both their roles in Raging Bull, Goodfellas, and Casino.

Rest In Peace Billy Batts
