Legendary actor and brawler Rip Torn died at home at age 88. Married to actresses Anne Wedgeworth, Geraldine Page, and Amy Wright, he was also the cousin of Sissy Spacek. Torn is best known for his Emmy-winning performance of Artie on the Larry Sanders Show.

If you've never seen his star-making role in Payday, you're in for a treat.

RIP Rip Torn

One of the greatest names ever? But he was always great and especially as Arthur in The Larry Sanders show but he always played memorable characters.

The Larry Sanders Show was undeniably great, but I would have to believe that more people know Rip Torn from the Men In Black franchise.

P.S. I miss Garry Shandling

Valentina Cortese, Italian screen legend and Oscar-nominated actress for Day For Night. She was 96. And it will come as no surprise to anyone, I thought she had died years ago.

RIP Jim Bouton

Ex major league pitcher and author of one of the greatest baseball books ever written "Ball Four" which was quite controversial at the time. I have read it many times and will read it many more.

I'm a poker player. I don't necessarily like to get up early in the morning. About 10 years ago the phone rang at 6:30 AM. I pick it up -- it's Jim Bouton.

I had written an article in a baseball fanzine claiming that Ball Four was the first post-war open-eyed look at sports, and it's irreverent iconoclastic tone enabled later phenomena such as Howard Cosell, but more importantly Woodward and Bernstein's taking down of the Nixon White House.

Bouton wanted permission to quote me when publicizing a re-issue of Ball Four. I said Sure. I asked him if he remembered me. I explained that I used to deliver the Bergen Evening Record to his brother's house when he was at the Yankees. He explained that he had no idea wtf I was talking about. He was a really sharp guy. I could throw anything at him and he would simply take it in stride. RIP

You might want to watch Kurt Russell's "The Battered Bastards of Baseball" which is a tribute to his father, Bing Russell, and his involvement with baseball. Jim is toward the end of the film.

The boxing champion Pernell "Sweet Pea" Whitaker died last night in a car crash, only 55. I'm no boxing expert but I do remember Whitaker when he won his gold medal and then later as a pro, he was fun to watch fight. He wasn't a perfect human being, had some drug troubles over the years, but he was by all accounts a special person. His son poignantly describes him in the espn piece I just read: "I can't really say how I'm feeling because I'm feeling shocked. I'm still trying to process everything that's going on. But he was a cool guy."

First black player for the Boston Red Sox, Pumpsie Green, dead at 85. The Red Sox could have signed Willie Mays, but they were slow to accept black players.
