Barrett Strong, who sang "Money (That's What I Want)" and co-wrote many of the very best Motown singles of the late 60s and early 70s (with Norman Whitfield), dead at 81.

I prefer the Beatles' version of that song, but he wrote some amazing songs with Whitfield, mostly for the Temptations. Look at this list.

"I Heard It Through the Grapevine" by both Marvin Gaye and Gladys Knight & the Pips

"War" by Edwin Starr

"Smiling Faces Sometimes" by the Undisputed Truth

"Cloud Nine"
"I Can't Get Next to You"
"Psychedelic Shack"
"Ball of Confusion"
"Papa Was a Rollin' Stone", all by the Temptations

An amazing lists of hits. We had every one of those records.

And CCR’s ‘Grapevine’ is as good as the one’s named.

RIP

not to be alarming,
but those sure seem to be symptoms of too much exposure to the cover song is better thread.

I think the Beatles' version of Money is one of the best things they ever did. Definitely their best cover (Twist and Shout is a close second).

i'm in no position to disagree with your opinion, may i offer mine for consideration?
when Barrett Strong sings it's easy to imagine circumstances that could have influenced the song
the Beatles, not so much

I don't know, to me Lennon sounds like he really does want the money.

Of course neither quite carry the conviction of this number:

Gordy and Bradford wrote it.

Strong recorded first, Beatles second; then the Stones and Flying Lizards

I like the Flying Lizards' version also.
The Stones' version is kinda lame.

Agree. Twist and Shout had more, and broader, competition, so trying to cover it is going to be a problem if you want to stand out.

Beatles version was fine until Red played his Lizard card.

Melinda Dillon, 83...great character actor of the 70s/80s/90s.
Memorable performances include her Oscar-nominated turns in Close Encounters Of the Third Kind and Absence Of Malice.

Eugene Lee, Broadway set designer. I mention him because I met him once when he was set designer for Trinity Square theater in Providence.
