If you've never seen Get On Up, his James Brown movie, you're in for a treat. Just a fantastic performance.

This movie is a monster -- it's highly underappreciated.

Are they shooting at us? They trying to kill James Brown today. You want to go down in history as the man who killed the funk?

The saxophone is a percussion instrument!

One of the impressive things was he was able to play James Brown from a teenager up to his last years. No CGI, no using different actors and he made it believable

He played the main villain in the Black Panther movie, Erik Killmonger.

Tom Seaver, now there was a pitcher. Really a transcendent kind of player. As a diehard St. Louis Cardinal fan and worshiper of Bob Gibson, I never loved Seaver but I sure did appreciate him. Just a titan of 60s-70s sports.

On last night White Sox broadcast (who Seaver played for) Steve Stone told a great Gibson/Seaver story. In his first game against Gibson in his first at bat Gibson threw the first pitch right under Seavers chin and took a few steps towards him and said "welcome to the National League".

When Gibson batted Seaver threw the first pitch right under Gibsons chin and took a few steps towards him and said "happy to be here".

Tom Seaver was like Michael Jordan for a few years in the 70s...just the biggest name in sports -at least in the NY/NJ area where I grew up. I remember every year spending my allowance on baseball cards in the hopes of getting a Seaver Cy Young card. they were hard to come by.

Off topic, but this reminds me of a tale about Sir Vivian Richards.

He had played and missed the ball a few times and the bowler tried to wind him up by coming up to him and saying “Look Viv, this is the ball, it’s red and round and weighs about 4 ounces”

The next ball Richards hit the ball out of the ground and said to the bowler “You know what it looks like, now go and find it”

I was searching for info about his career at USC when I came across this in Wikipedia:

'In 2019 NFL quarterback Tom Brady was denied the trademark "Tom Terrific", when the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office said it "may falsely suggest a connection with Tom Seaver".'

Too bad about Seaver. Great pitcher, and was a good person from what I recall.

Oddly enough, just read an old story yesterday about the Amazin' Mets.

stealing from somewhere else

Quote:
311 wins, 12x All-Star, 3x CY Young, 3x NL ERA, 3x NL Wins, 5x NL Strikeout leader, 1 No hitter and 1 World Series.

Also NL Rookie of the Year and had the highest ballot percentage for a long time at 98.84%.

He also holds the record for consecutive 200-strike-out seasons with nine.

Seaver's 61 career shutouts are second only to Warren Spahn (63) in the live-ball era. His career win-loss record percentage of .603 is one of the highest of any Hall of Fame pitcher with 300 wins in the live-ball era.

No major league pitcher has matched his feat of striking out ten consecutive batters (in the same game when he struck out 19, tying the current record)

Another amazing feat of his was his Augst 31st - Sept 27th stretch in 1969 when he threw 8 consecutive complete game victories on their eventual path to the world series.

Another fun fact, in 1977 he was 4 strikeouts away from having 10 straight 200 strikeout seasons. In 1978 he had 226 strikeouts. Almost making it 11 straight 200 strikeout seasons. ****ing unreal
my earliest memories of hearing about baseball pitchers was voiced by Mel Allen in the late 70's and Seaver and Nolan Ryan are the ones i remember. inexplicably i became a Mets fan based on their history and rode the suffering all the way to the 86 series.

RIP Lou. another great from my childhood gone.
i mostly played catcher through college, and i always appreciated a great base stealer...especially those that could get a rolling start.
