Charles Mingus with Eric Dolphy on bass clarinet.

This rocks...

Mingus was a percussionist
Dolphy was a mentalist

and Clifford Jordan, no slouch in his own right, got run over by a freight train.

I love Chet's horn - the tone he gets
when it first comes at about 0:14 I get the chills

the sound of cool jazz on the west coast

love that groove they get in to around the 2:00 mark when N-HØP finds a spot
and i love the way one person's name takes up the entire second row of personnel on the cover

don't believe i've ever heard of Norman Fearrington. pretty straightforward in this track but looks like he played with Jean-Luc Ponty and Eddie Harris a different times for decades.

recorded a month before Scott LaFaro died.

that Evans/LaFaro/Motian trio was top notch in the way they all share equal space within a song.

rainy day stuff - with my fave mixed drink - bourbon and ice coffee
this guy may not be great technically
but somehow it doesn't really matter
he hits all the right notes and gets his groove on.............niche stuff
love the way the guy gets a very clear tone out of his bass - so often the bass sounds like muffled

that was recorded at Van Gelder in late 1960. next day the recording session was this gem:

that's Paul Chambers on bass and Art Taylor on drums.

effing brilliant stuff from 1961
he doesn't have the rep of the legendary greats
many could not accept something so unconventional
this album is less wild than his others

I don't know how Sun Ra is thought of by the Jazz community, but he does have his circle of fans and some great players have been in his band.

The above is indeed brilliant imo.

not that i've heard anywhere close to his full discography, but late 50's/early 60's Sun Ra is right in my sweet spot.
such an adventurous composer

Bitched Brew may have kicked open the door, but In a Silent Way unlocked it first.

It's easy to forget how uptight critics were back then about segregating the musical genres.

I love listening to Silent Way and trying to distinguish all the keyboard activity going on.

let's just pause here for a moment and recognize the brilliance of John McLaughlin. i'm not even going to go in to his work with Al Di Meola & Paco De Lucia or the Mahavishnu Orchestra...just recognizing how bad ass a guitarist has to be to have TWO separate Miles tracks named after him. by the way if you like electric Miles then Big Fun is exactly what the title describes. and listen to On the Corner while you're at it.

oh, and as always, headphones are best

the beat structure that builds up leading to when John comes in around 6:30 and how he plays through it is bonkers. when i first heard it i thought the album was skipping.
