I am trying to continue the process of broadening my musical horizon. I'm pretty open to most forms/genres of music, I'm looking for some good underground rock or hip/hop to get into. Any suggestions welcomed
idk if this is what you're looking for on the rock side of things, but here's one group that a few of my friends put together a few years ago. Kind of reminds me of Better than Ezra except with more active melodic lines and the kit player is ridiculous.
I haven't bought any hip hop as of late but love the genre. IMO all the best stuff is going on 10 years old or older. People Under The Stairs, Pharcyde, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, the first Reflection Eternal album, older Roots stuff. I dunno, so much great stuff out there. Mos Def is good. Black Milk, Binary Star, Lyrics Born....
De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest are classic. Jurassic 5, Jay Electronica, Souls of Mischief, Hieroglyphics.
My car has a 4 CD changer, here is what is in there
1. Sonic youth- day dream nation
2. Jack white- blunderbuss
3. Modest mouse - we were dead before we left
4. Black keys - brothers
id recommend frank ocean's channel orange. full album is on youtube. ive been listening to it non stop. im open to all music minus screamo and bluegrass, and this **** is fantastic. takes r&b to a new level.
i have to admit that i don't listen to much new r&b -- mostly just old stuff like sam cooke, the four tops, motown-ish, etc.
I find http://www.pandora.com an awesome site to discover new music. I have found numerous artists and songs on there that I would not have found otherwise. You can customize your station according to your favorite artists, genres, or songs, and it is completely free.
Would you want to listen to foreign lang (Polish and Russian) hip hop? I could give you some links for that but some people hate listening to stuff in diff langs.
Ok cool, the guys are popular in their countries but probably never heard of outside of them, they might sound a bit mainstream for you if you're after something different.
