Can you suggest movies--silents, comedies, and biblical narratives--that have crucifixtion scenes. I'm doing an honors project with a student, and we've decided to look at how Hollywood portrays these scenes. (I'd also consider films outside of the Hollywood system, too.)

Conan the Barbarian
Life of Brian
Quo Vardis (upside down crucifixion)
Spartacus
Ben Hur
The Robe
The Long Good Friday
The Devils
The Sword and the Sorceror

Do you want all the specifically Jesus ones listed, or are you okay with those?

Sorry, I should have mentioned just the Jesus ones.

John

I know one good story about a crucifixion scene

The movie where John Wayne plays the centurion at the foot of the cross

John Wayne monotone: Truly this man was the son of God

Exasperated director: John please, say it with AWE

Wayne gathers his thoughts for the shot

John Wayne Monotone:
Awwwwwwwwwww truly this man was the son of God

I seem to remember people on X's made of straw or rattan somewhere in the series. I thought maybe it was at the edge of the forbidden zone in the first aper, but am not 100% sure.

Maybe being lashed to an X is too far from crucifixion too, but I think the goal of "leave 'em hanging up there spreadeagled in the sun till they die" made it suggestion-worthy.

Are we not mentioning Passion of Christ because it it too obvious? I assume so, but just making sure. Plus I want to feel like I'm contributing.

Oh, and can I ask what class this is for?

This is for my film class. The same student also did an honors project with me for Comp II on impromtu roadside memorials. Specifically, we want to look at how Hollywood films have treated the crucifixtion of Jesus in many films. I know of a few films, such as Passion, Ben Hur, The Robe, and The Last Temptation of Christ, but I'm hoping to have a much broader scope.

I never saw Jeanne D'Arc, but were any of her compatriots who escaped fire and sword crucified? How about Ivan the Terrible? I'm just coming up with costume dramas about the bad old days here.

Of course, Jesus won't make an appearance there.

How about that Kevin Smith film, Dogma?

the movie "stigmata" has some seems where the hands/feet are getting nailed to a cross, not sure if they actually show the crucifixtion though...

Jesus kind of makes an appearance, but not being crucified.

PS. I'm reserving this as a potential future avatar in case Palin takes over when McCain conks out and us US satellites get a choice of 'be born again or burn in hell sooner rather than later'

It's not "hollywood" per se, nor is it Jesus, but Life of Brian?

Oh, and Alec's visions in A Clockwork Orange...
And it seems like there was a scene in Dracula 2000, which, if asked, I will deny ever having seen...

Still counts as "Hollywood" since it follows the basic principles of the "Holywood" system. I think it would be a good movie to look at, too.

Ah good memory on the Clockwork. I remember the lashing while carrying the cross, don't remember if the guy was actually plugged into the ground.
