So what the new black activists do
For our freedom is just being them

From these boxes that they have us in cooped
And grow to smash the mold that they casted of you

For the law forms
That's easy - spend 2 weeks eatin popcorn
Like students do 'cept I'm grown and it's not dorms
So it's a bit more pathetic - ok a lot more...
But what ya'll gotta mock for?
What's wrong with my mach 3?
Ya'll gotta be macho and mach more
Well not me and I do not need to change blades
It's all my own hair I shave
Chin back face legs
And the rashes rarely last more than 8 days
Usually so that's cool with me - I can save great
(But hygiene)
Man that's no reason to buy things
Like soap or visine or getting clothes dry cleaned
I don't throw away dough on no facials
Yeah I make rolls of my pennies
I even pay folks
In clubs out this case full of pesos I lug
(Bro get em exchanged)
Nope, I'm waiting til the rate's low
(Scrub)
Don't hate yo
Just cause ya'll wasteful
Ya'll wanna make your bruh the scapegoat
It's bugged
It's all nuance

If you got a little bread like croutons
Download them new songs and spread them coupons

This is Shad's most clever song in my opinion. In it he's having a conversation with himself expressing all his doubts about recording his first album.

Quote:
I'm staring at the world's blankest page
With with all the angst and rage
I can't convey
Just feeling so distraught and depressed
as I imagine these lines filled
with all the sick rhyme skill
I thought I possessed
It's a pressure to produce, its my process its slow
I got no mic presence and no progress to show
Its this project its so ambitious
It makes me wish that I could just
sit and talk to a professional musician
Cause maybe he could tell me if I got the talent
I just wanna shoot the gift
All I wanna do is spit so bad and its sad
Cause all I wanna do is quit when the pressure hits
Pondering the prospect of failure
I get left with this sick deep feelin'
most definite, I should sleep this off

(Man you can't be this soft.)

Yo where'd you come from?

(Listen son take those bedsheets from off your body
No time for rest, don't just resign to stress
I'm the real MC that you wanted to find
to test your rhymes and get
all the thoughts off your mind and address em
So sit up for a second let me answer those questions

[Hook: Original Rap, with new school leaders]

(Young bro, open your eyes you're gonna make great music
Just open your soul and cats will relate to it
If you open your heart at least you'll escape through it)

Yeah I'm scared that I will but still no one will take to it
I guess that's why I'm stuck before this opening line
Cause when my demo drops its gotta be blowin' some minds
To make some dough with these rhymes I must be showin' them I'm...

(What, deaf? Cause only the deaf need to go and get signed
Just to express themselves, you can get your wealth in other ways
I ain't tryin to scam millions, or get your love and praise
Cause god gave man brilliance)

Yeah but why plan buildin' if the most I'll ever do
is rhyme for my grandchildren?

(Respect! You love to get but you hate to earn
This time can be a blessing if you wait your turn,
and simply stay concerned with making sure you state what you feel
when you're lacin' your reals and always elevatin' your skills
See I've learned this thing determines what it takes to get ill
And real patience doesn't mean you sit and wait for a deal
Build with local cats, do the open mic thing)

There ain't none!

(Then make some, you wanna be an all time great son?
Cool, do your thing, but just recognize this
success will make you happy at best
and make you rich at worst
and make you paranoid bitter and afraid
and either way there's no use for cash in the grave
Problems and platinum plaques,
so don't let your raps detract from the bigger things in life
cause that's a trap)

[Hook: Original rap, with new school leaders]

Yo, tell me exactly how you got your props?

(One day I started working hard and just forgot to stop
If you don't stay on your rhymes you'll probably rock the spot
Around the time pigs fly like some cops with hops)

But man I'll never match you

(That's true, who in the world can?
Most of these cats can't even flow, like Pearl Jam
I'm just playin', but you gotta have confidence)

Well what about humility?

(Well I'm not sayin' be pompous kid, just recognize your ability
Cause a real MC knows if he's competent, you feelin me?)

Well are you feelin' me, like do I got what it takes?

(Well do you got a vision, a purpose, a mic, and some breaks?
I know you got the passion cause I can see it in your face
And that's already more than half of these cats that's making tapes)

I'm trying to be making papes though, school ain't my thing
all I think about is rappin' and makin' this happen and...

(Man I been there, matter of fact I'm still here
Let me get some cats on the mic to explain this to you real clear
Fellows who can speak with authority)

Listen:

While real MC's and DJ's are a minority [Gang Starr - You Know my Steez]

A dope MC is a dope MC with or without a record deal, all can see [KRS One - Step Into a World]

(See no need for boozy crowds clappin' their hands)

I never let a statue tell me how nice I am [Tribe Called Quest - Award Tour]

Stay far from timid only make moves when your hearts in it [Notorious B.I.G - Sky's the Limit ]

It ain't hard to tell [Nas - It Ain't Hard to Tell]

I part mimics market it for target and charts with smart gimmicks
from the fresh soul for those sharp witted and artistic.
I should have been more clear in my OP. I don't think Shad is the most marketable rapper, like someone who is going to find mass mainstream appeal, but when it comes to smart lyrics I haven't heard anyone who's better.

Having seen him live he's also the best freestyler I've ever seen.

he's one step away from being canibus. Using lots of long words and not saying anything or having any personality

Wait, doesn't hip/hop just have really catchy beats and pretty much only talk about bangin' shorties, slinging rock, and that kind of stuff?

If so, this isn't hip/hop.

You're just wrong. I'll explain it in terms that are as simple as possible.

1) He was born in Africa and moved to Canada as a child, his family was raped and murdered and he barely got out alive. If you spent 10 minutes listening to his music before forming your opinion of him you would realize he has a lot more to say than your average rapper. He draws on a lot of the things he dealt with as a youth, like being brought up in a family that wasn't dysfunctional while hanging out with people who probably wouldn't make it. It would be depressing if someone who went through what Shad and his family went through used his talent to make generic music. There's nothing wrong about making money doing that, but not every musician's goal is to make a million touring for 16 year olds. It's hard to get to know someone when they don't give you the 20 second hook and catchy beat every other musician does, but not everyone goes after the low hanging fruit and not everyone gets into music to make millions off of ignorant children.

2) He uses multi-syllabic rhymes better than any rapper I've heard while staying on a topic and not swerving to fit stuff in to fill 4 bars.

Shad destroys conventional hip hop and the ******ed things it appeals to. I doubt it's his aim, but from experience most of the people who hate him are the ones who try to build an image for themselves on the things he embarrasses so easily.

Anyways most people are hopeless and can't recognize something that's good from something that isn't. It's what makes poker profitable and what keeps the world turning. I realize now how dumb it is to have an opinion about music on the internet, but man I was expecting at least 1 person to get something out of this.

The reason he seems ordinary to you is probably that he appeals to things you aren't interested in. I don't see how you could fault the way he writes lyrics.

iLLogic is better.

I hate when it rains, cause in puddles I encounter this guy

Unable to give a rebuttal but swift as the pain flood his eyes

wonderin why he's a gift with no purpose

A priceless one-of-a-kind piece that's worthless
Grounded with no surface

And when he shows one, it's a facade

Cause inside he fights feelings that he was mistake by God

I see his confusion and self-deception

Questions of relevance and intelligence

He holds an illusion of self-acceptance

that he shows to those outside lookin in

He's outside lookin in to his own life; lookin for strength

to carry on as a pawn in this chess game of existance

In his mind he wants to go on to the dawn

and leave the stress that came with existance

Hopin in death he'll find life

Cause as he lives, he roams the dark, tryin to find light

He's made his heart so hard, he doesn't even cry anymore

Cause he's confronted sorrow frequently

His heart's been broken frequently

It's like he's lost some part of him and just haven't found it yet

So in his search, he's left with nothin but questions and regret

All he wants to know is how one day, he's content

and the next day he's cryin

cause his life isn't what he thought life meant

He just wants to be happy, with his love and all

But too often I get messages through telepathic calls

He's askin me through a puddle what more must he endure to continue

But for some reason he knows he most endure to continue

[Chorus]

When I walk past puddles, my reflection calls beggin me

to answer his questions about life and his perceptions

and tell him why I hate him so much

And you wonder why I hate him so much?

Now when I walk past puddles, my reflection calls beggin me

to answer his questions about life, and his perceptions

and tell him why I hate him so much

Damn, I wonder why I hate him so much

[Illogic]

Why did I hate him so much? I wondered, pondered on the question

What in my mind caused me to despise my reflection?

I didn't know I just knew when I saw him, how I felt

and hated the fact that he had to play with the cards that he was dealt

He's come in contact with some ill things that can't be explained

Life's extracted his energy to where the pain can't be contained

So to me he comes, sheddin tears like skin

Intimate with some, only the ones he calls friends

If he even exists, he only exists in pain

It's like his life is a myth

and he's been blessed with the gift of shame, I mean

From birth to love he's been betrayed

He's an unknown in how to cope with that pain and dissapointment

he's come to know as he's grown

He feels he stands alone in this world of puddle images

And he awaits the time for when, time finishes

He tries to elevate thought, but he's still chillin in the basement

Awaitin a rebirth of his soul as it fears it's spiritual placement

[Chorus]

[Illogic]

God I pray you can give me a purpose or help me find it

Cause on this narrow path of self-damnation, I can't find it

Is it somethin I need to know, some way I need to grow

to get out of this rut, God give me some self-trust

Love is somethin I'm lookin for but I've found it, or have I?

I wanna live but can I, or do I have to die to?

I try to, have life but my life seems kinda worthless

as I'm starin at this puddle

God I pray that you can give me a purpose or help me find it

Cause on this narrow path of self-damnation, I can't find it

Is it somethin I need to know, some way I need to grow

to get out of this rut, God please give me some self-trust

Love is somethin I'm lookin for - thought I found it, or have I?

I wanna live but can I, or do I have to die to?

I try to, have life but my life seems kinda worthless

as I'm starin in this puddle

[Chorus]

{*music changes*}

[Illogic]

I sit alone in dismal silence

Peering into the eyes of my reflection

Wondering if his thoughts are adjacent to my own

What visions of eerie savagery

are passing if purity lurks in the mind of he who I mirror?

Lookin at him I am disgusted

He lacks beauty in all external areas

and internally he seems so confused

Perplexed with this conundrum of life

He proceeds to function or cope, lookin at it realistically

Esteem he lacks, in all areas of existance

Reason unknown

What is the cause of the lack of this self-acceptance?

I mean it seems like he needs constant assurance

Some type of ritual proof that he's even worth the oxygen he breathes

A, light that shines upon him

Is his living in vein? Does he have a purpose?

Answer - eternally unknown
