Not songs you dislike - but songs that are classics...but so over-played that if you never heard them again it would be fine by you.

Some songs, like Linger by The Cranberries, or Just What I Needed by The Cars, I can listen to over and over in a continual loop and never get tired of them. But then there are these:

Sweet Home Alabama - Lynyrd Skynyrd
Nice hook, great lyrics...but yeah...after the 43,375th time, I'm over it.

Imagine - John Lennon
very good melody and a beautiful philosophy - but why do I always immediately switch the channel when it comes on?

Black Magic Woman - Santana
Some terrific guitar work on this one, and it really is a great song. But stop playing it, please. Strangely enough, I can listen to the Fleetwood Mac version over and over.

What's yours?

All of those are great picks.

It's hard for me to listen to Jeremy - Pearl Jam anymore. Pink Floyd - Another Brick in the Wall Pt. 2.

It`s funny how I read Dominics post, agreed on all of them and thought to myself that only "The Wall" is missing, and then I read Vix`s reply.

So I`m going to add "We are the champions" from Queen. Somehow they play it all the time an german radio. It was a great song some time ago, but I can`t stand it anymore.

Well, I don't know if I'd listen to "We Are the Champions" on the radio but I sure as hell want to hear it when the Lions win the Superbowl.

Because a little voice (John Cole's) keeps saying that this song sucks.

Jack and Diane - John Cougar
Doobie Brothers - Black Water
Billy Joel - Piano Man
Van Morrison - Brown Eyed Girl
(Or I guess most any other piano bar song in a non piano bar setting)

Would not get tired of:
Proud Mary - Tina Turner
I'm on Fire - Bruce Springsteen (Jennifer Nettles and Ben Harpers version at the Kennedy Awards a few years ago was better) You TubeLink
Midnight Train to Georgia - Gladys Knight

It's true.

I don't mind not hearing Hotel California ever again.

Alice Cooper - School's Out comes to mind. On second thought, I'm not sure if it qualifies as a "great song". Surprised that American Pie hasn't been mentioned yet.

Amazing Grace

The sound isn't close to sweet any more.

My answer is easy: Hotel California.

Great song, great genre, great band. I ****ING HATE THIS SONG every time I hear that opening guitar arrangement I immediately flip the channel.

Any BOSTON song.
Great when they came out, but SO overplayed.

Any recentish Aerosmith, most notably Love in an Elevator

Heart, Magic Man

I may be stretching the definition of "great" with those but they are definitely very popular songs so I think they qualify.

Most of these listed so far are pretty good submissions. I agree with the fact that I would change the station even though I like the song but most of these I would not be able to do away with forever. Just Hotel California. I'd probably pay money to never hear this thing come on my radio ever again. And it's a good song.

Most songs that are dated/of its time. For me this is a lot of early 90s music.

I actually think all of these are terrible songs. Imagine is an okay melody, but it is hard for me to get past the video of him playing a 10k piano he probably got for free while telling me to not worry about possessions.

These are all terrible songs anyways. Brown Eyed Girl isn't a piano song. Jeese, ever hear the solo?

My submission is "Wish you were here" by Pink Floyd. Not that I hate the song, but way tired of it.

Most early 90s music was not so good to begin with. I never liked Nirvana, and I was sick of STP after a while. As much as liked NIN, I can stand not to listen to his stuff anymore either. I was listening to Tricky yesterday and I couldn't take much of it for some reason. I was also getting my ass handed to me while grinding so that didn't help.

I can also stand to not ever listen to anything by Rainbow ever again, or Deep Purple.

Just waiting for the inevitable debate about whether or not X is a great song or not. I guess I can swing with public opinion that"Hotel California "is a great song, but since I am of the opinion that everything that execrable collective ever produced was, at it's best, a shallow Byrds ripoff, I have no problems with never hearing anything they ever did again. Although I have a soft spot for their cover of "Ol '55", I would hardly consider life empty had I never heard it.

I guess I'll stick with the standard canon.

"Satisfaction"-The Rolling Stones
Embodies the genre as well as any song ever written. Still crackles and howls. Haven't listened to the song in it's entirety in years.

"You Really Got Me"- The Kinks
Funny, because I still blast All the Day and All of the Night shamelessly, and it's considered a retread of YRGM.

Anything from Born in the USA.

"Stairway to Heaven"-Led Zeppelin
Actually, a lot of those seventies guitar anthems could fall onto the list, partly due to simple over-saturation in my yoot, and partly due to their not really being "great" in the first place. I figure "Stairway..." is a both a literal pick, and a representative one.

You know, it's funny, a lot of songs I feel that way about now, but if it actually came down to it, I don't know that I would want them completely expunged from future listening. A few years ago, I would have put "A Day in the Life" on the list. But when my youngest discovered the Beatles, and I put a bunch of stuff on his Ipod, I caught myself digging that song, a well as a few others I never thought I would really listen to again. Ended up putting them on my Ipod, and really enjoying them.

Not sure anyone would ever seriously consider anything Rainbow ever did as "great". And "Smoke on the Water" is definitely on the list, although "Highway Star" has been on constant kudzu rotation since about 1975, and is staying there as the theme song to my hyper-extended adolescence.
