Got Them Winter Blues? The Lounge LC Thread Got Them Winter Blues? The Lounge LC Thread

Oh I forget about that. They actually pay musicians to play in Austin.

In LA, it's an honor if you don't have to pay to play! The really nice bars don't force you to leave right after your set. The top-notch bars don't force you to place your equipment on Sunset Blvd while you are going to grab the van.

You would have to pay for beer at an open mic in Austin, which is pretty much the only reason they run them. The major ones, like Baker Street and BD Riley's, is fascinating because people actually go out and watch open mics, so it's a bar full of an audience and maybe 10 musicians on the list. The ones that are all musicians tend to close down quickly since musicians don't like to drink beer, I guess. Well, Wine House was a strange exception. The musicians all bring a huge entourage with them and it's a huge party. They also tend to stay to the bitter end, which is definitely unique.

As far as I've seen though, the MCs have to buy their own beer and they often aren't paid in either city. It's a labor of love for everyone involved.

So, no, even if I'm in "the band," which is silly concept since I'm always alone, I have to pay for my own beer, even if I am gigging.

... I did say she never gave me a free beer, so whatever hints she is dropping can be ignored until that happens.

dT,
what are these "bars" you speak of?

^^^^^^
I like snow. Turns even ugliness to something worth staring at. I also enjoy it even more so when others are knee deep in it and I'm lounging on a beach in Hawaii.

Ray is probably neck deep in the stuff by now and can't wait for the Spring thaw.

According to Ray Zee, this is a place I should be hanging out with John Cole and crying over beers.

They can also be a music division, or if you like slang, "spitting bars" is doing top-level rapping.

I can be at the bar spitting bars at the bartender; ask if she'd like to eat a candy bar.

Z,
please go play in the surf with stinky fish in your pocket

dT,
'would you like some candy?' sounds sub-optimal

No snow here. Yet. I like looking at it too. On the top of mountains.

i tend to stink of fish most days.
her talking and telling dave she is ho;ding his card is the flirting and telling him she is interested

where does the money come from when you stick that card into the machine. does it spit it out. what if you need a quick 1000 dollars, how do you get it with a card.

what happens if you have an earth quake and the power is out for a week or two. do those machines still work and people in the store give you credit for food until the power comes back.

are those cards weighing less than the cash you can get. cash isnt very heavy to carry.

you dont have to cry into your beer that is just a saying, but many old timers put salt into their beer so there may be something to it.

my cabin by glacier national park has 6 feet of snow on it. i wont get into it until may.

Knew a guy who put salt in his coffee. Makes sense when you think about it.

If you don't like the weather, wait 10 minutes.

Your two posts were exactly 10 minutes apart, so I took the opportunity.

I know. I hate New England weather until June. Then I only hate it intermittently.

Ray, I promise I'll be less of a punk next time. I did promise to see her at the same time and place.

Ray, I'm not as successful in poker and life as you were. A "quick thou" just isn't in my vernacular. I think my daily spending limit was only $250 for the longest time, even though my bank account was considerably larger in those years.

I go to the bank, like anyone else, but for a $1k item, I'm buying a cashier's check or doing a bank transfer.

I hear they used stones during the last major earthquake.

No, but cash is scary to carry. If someone picks my wallet or I lose my wallet, I still have all my money.

I never had my wallet picked since I only wear pants with buttons on the pockets, but I have lost my wallet. I've also been robbed a few times and during my late teens and early 20s, had my place broken into about every 3 to 6 months.

There's also the issues of change. I used to do that whole gallon milk jug thing, but it's more irritating than useful.

This is called "navy style coffee." I learned that from a Tom Clancy novel and Google confirms this is a real thing.

I do suggest taking a pass on Tom Clancy. The movies are definitely better.

yea after reading a few of his books you stop and think about it and say to yourself, "why did i waste that time"

I recall liking Red Storm Rising and Cardinal of the Kremlin back when they were first published. They have probably aged poorly because the deep exploration of technology is way out of date.
The movies were crap compared to the books.

Red Storm Rising was incredible to me as an ex-Navy Officer. The details were so spot on it was hard to believe he had so much inside knowledge. I couldn't get enough of those earlier books though. The early Ryan books were great but him becoming president was just stupid and I lost all interest. But those first 4 or 5 were fun reads.

??? Spring training is here! Opening day in less than 3 weeks as the season starts very early this year. That means 90% of the first week or two games on the east coast and Midwest will likely be snowed out

I tried to read Hunt for Red October and probably some other stuff.

He's like a modern update of Melville. His writing is great if you are into that stuff, or if you were once a member of the Navy. There is zero doubt Clancy was passionate and knowledgeable, but I just couldn't get past his writing style.
