Fall LC Thread: Somebody Who's Not Exhausted Think of a Witty Title Fall LC Thread: Somebody Who's Not Exhausted Think of a Witty Title

Been interviewing people for various jobs the past couple weeks. One person asked why I had stayed with the college for thirty years.

My response: "So me people would be lost without me."

I really can't help myself sometimes.

They call Python "Programmable English."

I think that is fitting... when foreigners learn English, they say it is simple, then years later, they realize it is a complex language to master.

Python is good because it is a nearly universal language, but also note that there is no such thing as "learning Python." Python happens to be one tool you can use to learn how to program.

Hi DaveT, I would Just learn python if it was good at everything; I would be learning programming for the purpose of building something not to be a computer scientist. I’ll probably need to know some JavaScript too. I’m just saying it would be more practical “I want to make something” instead of theoretical, for me.

Do you have tenure? Either way that’s wonderful job security.

Yes, I have tenure as a full professor although I'm currently serving as interim dean for the second time. Plan on at least a couple more years of teaching before I leave--that is if I can escape the dean's job.

Software is similar to making a movie: it is applied theory.

There is no such thing as "I want to just build something" without the underlying theory. **** gets deep really fast, unless you want to build something in WordPress. It definitely helps to do an intro class. Although it sounds like a lot of work to do "theory" for 3 months, it will ultimately save you years of heartache.

Year ago I once tried to see the Dean of the Science Department at my Graduate School. It would have been easier for me to gain an audience with The Pope. I was summarily dismissed by the office personnel as not only completely unworthy but with an air of extreme distain. I'm surprised they didn't try to throw me out of one of the windows. The Dean's office was, I think, on the fifth or sixth floor of some enormous administrative building.

Just one of life's useful lessons.

Far out, bro

I got called in to talk to the Dean of Arts and Sciences when I was an undergrad. I didn't know what a Dean did at the time, and I still don't, but in I went. I had dropped a course and either had hurt the professor's feelings, or he thought he had hurt my feelings, but that is what we discussed -- strange for a campus w/ ~50k students, but there we have it.

I explained that I simply thought I'd be wasting my time and the professor's by writing the paper I had been assigned. The dean understood immediately, much to my amazement. It was one of the two or three adult conversations I had with a staff member while I student.

One of those words that stick with you. I don't remember much else about European History I took as a freshman (many, many years ago), but do remember Dr. Archer talking about that.

Reminds me of the Ferguson riots that took place during the holidays under the "Peace on Earth" and "Joy to the World" banners

I don’t remember if I ever spoke to a dean or not. I used my college experience to learn different things than most people. My professor I. Spanish sent me to an office to talk to a higher up one time because I couldn’t remember the Spanish and instead of answering the test questions I drew a bunch of animals talking in Spanglish, often saying some strange things, all over the test pages. I don’t actually remember that persons title but we had a nice conversation and indicated. To me that unlike my Spanish professor he thought it was at least acceptably funny.

I know some basic theory. Not enough theory to do what I want to do but almost. There’s a big difference between someone who learns html to make a personal website, someone who goes to a boot camp for 8 weeks to learn how to make websites, someone who is self taught and spends two years making their own game in c++ , and someone like Donald Knuth. There’s a lot of stuff you don’t have to understand to be an effective programmer. Of course, the more you do the less you’ll have to use stack overflow

Why is it Friday night already?
11-20-2021 , 08:07 PM
It's Saturday. Haven't driven a car in a month. Still staying at my brother's house. Ready to buy a new car, and there's none to be found. (That may be an exaggeration.)

Ray zee, I donÂ’t think you or anyone else actually wants me to respond anymore but in case you did, It was really great to ever get to talk to you. I donÂ’t think IÂ’ll ever get the chance to talk to you the way IÂ’d like to so IÂ’ll miss you forever. IÂ’m sorry I didnÂ’t really do anything these last ten years, IÂ’m really sorry I let everyone down. ItÂ’s too late now. So IÂ’ll begin again, IÂ’m already cut off from my parents money except for lawyers , my family, my job, my friends have all moved on. So IÂ’m going to begin again at the level I deserve. Nothing. A totally non attention seeking Kansas drifter doing the best he can. I am selfish but I donÂ’t really like it. IÂ’m going to continue being selfish and thereÂ’s a good chance IÂ’ll be I. A ward or something. I just gave most of my remaining bankroll to a secret lover. I might not even make it with what I already gave away. I donÂ’t have a degree. I donÂ’t have anything anymore.
But I do have something I have not had for two years. Freedom. As of today for the first time in two years IÂ’m legally allowed to buy mouth wash and IÂ’m also legally allowed to travel. I had my own case dismissed in court. I had everything. Everything. But IÂ’ve slowly lost it all because of me. Me.

And my family is debating who is going to take care of me . But what they donÂ’t know is I donÂ’t need money. Not real money. I have a place and a 12 month lease. And a paid off car. And a trout fishing license, and about a thousand books IÂ’ll never read or. Know whatÂ’s in them and three pairs of shoes and a high end pc and an old cell phone and an empty but working refrigerator with two eggs that are outdated , and a cheap frozen pizza in it and pictures I can look at from when I did have things. I donÂ’t need a degree or a real relationship that last. I donÂ’t need anything. In fact IÂ’ve lost everything and pushed everyone away and I still have more than I need. No one needs to take care of me. 5 years from now if I get hungry I can just go to jail at worst. All they can do is keep in you in a cage. IÂ’ll never help anyone like in my dreams.. but those were my dreams. My dreams.
