Wholecut,

I'm not going to wear Oprea pumps. I would consider them if I had to attend white-tie events, but otherwise will go with some kind of lace-ups.

Thremp,

I probably wear black tie 4 times a year. 2 of those times I wear a kilt with Gillie Brogues. So really the shoes would only be used about twice a year, which is why I'm leaning against buying patent leather shoes right now. However it doesn't sit quite right with me that I'll essentially be wearing a business formal shoe to what is basically a party.

gents, any suggestions for slimmer cut business casual pants (twill or similar)? stuff that won't break the bank is great, but i don't mind shelling out if they're worth it.

Patent leather looks great with a tux, but captoe balmorals are totally fine too, so if you're only going to get more wear out of the captoes, go with them.

well that's no fun

(fwiw, my understanding is that opera pumps are certainly not just for white tie)

check the buy/sell forum on style forum, people are always selling incotex and mabitex pants for $80 -$110 ish. these are nice pants and typically cut pretty slim...slim enough that the 1 pair I tried on I couldn't wear b/c I have big thighs

found a couple listings for those on styleforum but the ones listed there are more like slacks, dressier than i usually need. i am talking about something more in the neighborhood of chinos i guess. it looked like they might have something like that on the mabitex website but i couldn't figure out how to navigate that ****

they do look like nice pants though.

This might be the fashion equivalent of posting to ask "how do I play 3b pots OOP".. but...

Do you guys have any idea of what type of outfit I should wear to the 50th anniversery Guggenheim auction. Tickets were 175 a piece so I'm thinking it's going to be kind of an upper crust crowd.. but maybe somewhat hipsterish since Animal Collective is performing after? I'm not really a sport jacket type guy, but feel like maybe I should go to Burberry or something and drop a grand on something like this. My style is generally kind of preppy/mod and I wear very big chunky black glasses.

Basically I'm thinking a jacket/tie is kind of mandatory, even if it's done in a semi casual way. But I just don't even know where to start.

I don't know if this is the right thread for this question but it has to be with appearance so I think it's legit. What's the difference between the $10 haircut I've been getting my whole life and a more expensive haircut? Is it worth it in your opinions?

It can be worth it but it depends heavily on whether you find someone good at a salon vs someone who just charges a lot and sucks. The qualitative difference between the two can be significant -- expensive haircuts are usually all-scissor cuts that grow in more naturally because they're layered well, better texturized... basically just better executed overall. They'll look good for 4-6 weeks, and after that, you might just need a maintenance trim. $10 cuts are typically generic factory haircuts that don't take into account the shape of your head, the growth pattern of your hair, etc., not to mention the questionable taste of the caliber of people that give $10 haircuts. They might look passable for 2 weeks but grow out funky.

I'd say depends on your hair, and the cut you get. If you have just straight hair and you're getting the standard cut (trim, shorter on side, longer on top) there's really no need to drop $80. Agree with skunkworks about scissors/blade vs. buzzer (buzzer? wtf are these called).

I have really thick sorta wavy hair, so if I don't go to someone good its basically a disaster. Also the salon I go has really really hot hair stylists, and for $75 I get a neck/shoulder massage for 10-15 min, plus wash before, wash after. Lots of more $ places have nice stuff like that, many let you come in within a week or so for free if you don't like something small or need a touch up.

edit: haha, I just got an email from my haircutting place bc it's my bday month, I get a complimentary Color Enhancing Gloss Treatment and blow dry with my favorite stylist! Did i mention most of the clientele are female.

I've had $10, $20, $30, and a single $70 haircut.

IMO, the best value happens at the $20 level. The $20/$30/$70 all looked 95% the same to me. The $10 ones were hit or miss depending on the stylist/barber.

lol I think I pay $15 for a haircut at one of the nicest places in town (or did). It didn't matter that I had shoulder length hair. <3 Sexism.

FWIW for the most part, the difference between a $30 haircut and $70+ haircut is what city your hair happens to be in when it gets cut. This is especially true if your hair type and style is standard and your head isn't horribly misshapened; if it is, I'd suggest trying to find someone who clearly knows what they're doing. Typically they're the ones who actually consult with you for 5 minutes about what you want, how you style your hair, check where the swirls are on your head, check for any potential gotchas, etc.

BTW Fyte On, they're called clippers.

Have some pretty basic questions here. I am trying to build a basic wardrobe, but I'm a really young guy so I'm still trying to dress pretty casual. My standard has always just been nice jeans(ironheart/flathead), some random shoe(generally Red Wing GTs), and T shirt.

I'm mainly just looking to pick up some nice dress shirts to replace the T shirts with, but I don't really know where to go. I'm assuming its best to get custom fit, especially when I'm just going to be wearing it with jeans. I was going to order from mytailor.com, but it says it takes up to 8 weeks to deliver and I'm going on vacation for the summer on may 1st and want to have the shirts by then.

What kind of store would I be looking for to buy some of these? I live in a smallish city(300k), so I don't really know where to go, or even what type of store. I also don't know what type of dress shirt is best for the casual-dressy look?

Also, I'm kind of wanting to buy another pair of shoes, but I really have no clue what would be good for that. Something casual yet dressy, that won't completely kill my feet(will be for clubbing). Suggestions? Budget is preferably <400 for the shoes.

Sorry for the post being so poorly articulated ;/

Has anyone used Modern Tailor at all?

( another custom made-to-measure shirt place )

I originally ordered a shirt from MyTailor and was happy with the results, but after shipping+duty fees it is just too expensive.

It looks like with Modern Tailor you can get some $20 off coupons and bring the cost of shirts down closer to the $40 range.

Thoughts on North Face fleeces? Do you think they're fine for casual wear, or does it make you look like a tool and/or a sheeple? I swore I'd never wear one because it seems like every single yuppie or middle class white person below the age of 35 rocks these. But then I saw a Denali marked down to $100 from $165 and impulse bought it. I have to admit, it does feel like it's very well made, comfortable, and warm. But still can't decide if I want to return it or not.

I like them but have also been wearing the same one for ~10 years. The things got so popular if I could go back I would buy all Mountain Hardware stuff as opposed to North Face, but at this point I have two much invested in compatible gear to go back.

Just rock the thing though, it isn't "cool" or anything but its not like you will look like a tool or anything either.

I read an article once and it had a picture of a young rich kid looking otherwise nice, except for his north face fleece. the gist was "replace fleece with blazer and he goes from way below average dressed to way above average".

no doubt its warm, well made, and comfortable. but far from stylish, unless you are skiing or something

There's a huge thread on these guys over at style forum with generally positive reviews. I plan to use them during my next wardrobe upgrade. Definitely check coupon availability...

Hadn't come across this thread earlier and I thought I'd start my "journey" here by posting some of my favorite pieces of clothing at the moment.

Got many more which I couldn't find a picture of (or something similar) - dress shirts, casual collared shirts, a plaqued scarf, etc.

Would also like to get a hat like this:

The problem is that my head is weird-shaped so I don't know how it would fit me. Hopefully I'll find one in the future so I'll know.
