I really dislike any brogue boot with a rugged looking sole like that. Speaking of boots I just bought another pair of Beckmans in chestnut:

FWIW, broguing was originally designed for shoes intended for outdoor use in the countryside so it's much more at home on a rugged boot than a dress "boot" like the dalton.

Actual winter boots really cannot be dressy. Something like the long branches or other english country boot with a commando/vibram sole can handle some inclement weather, but not daily exposure to 6 inch deep puddles made from salt, road grime, and slush.

You definitely do not want daltons. Supposedly something like these are pretty durable, but then you're really pushing the limits of what looks ok in an office environment.

I'd just get some black sorrels and leave a couple pairs of loafers in your desk to change into.

I also own both the Long Branch and the Dalton. The Dalton sole wouldn't hold up well under those conditions. Also, I think the Dalton is the best looking but least comfortable of any shoe I own. The Long Branch is so much easier to walk in, and I think it's AE's best boot sole for inclement weather. For another option on a sole that might do OK in that weather but wouldn't stand out as much as the Long Branch, you might want to consider the Bayfield.

Yeah, if it's really raining or there's slush or whatever then get some LL Bean boots LDO.

thanks for the responses everyone.

yeah I work from home, so I'm really only looking for something nice to wear when I'm going out for the night in the winter. I like those Long Branch that pvn posted and am leaning on getting those. seem like they'd be great when there's some light snow and rain.

What would your recommendations be as far as non-boots go? I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to all of this stuff. do I wear boots when it's not going to snow or rain? Are nice summer shoes (that aren't loafers) the same as winter ones? regardless I could use some solid shoes too considering my entire collection currently consists of sperry topsiders, some sandals, and a pair of track shoes.

IMO those somewhat dressy leather boots are purely a fashion statement. Which is fine. They are no better for bad weather than their oxford counterparts and shouldn't be justified by saying "oh, I can wear them in situation X where I couldn't wear dress shoes."

You buy dressy boots because they're ****ing sweet, period.

Are the Daltons pretty awesome? Would only use as something that looks good as no snow here. Currently have neumoks (which I love) and loakes version of strands as my main going out shoes. Am I better off getting a boot like a Dalton (already have desert boots) or another pair of say neumoks or strands?

As I wrote earlier, I think they are the best looking but least comfortable of my footwear.

Thoughts on this Levi's leather jacket?

It has a pretty cool lining ...

I'm also eyeing this one, worn by Bond in Skyfall, but it costs 4x more and I don't think it would fit as well because it only goes down to small and people say to size down on them, while the first one comes in XS.

I would agree with this. I get tons of complements on the daltons, but between bad weather and days I know I'll be on my feet a lot, I don't wear them very much. The LBs are much more versatile, as I've mentioned earlier in this thread, I've worn them with a suit on a drizzly day, I've gone hunting in them, they're perfect with jeans, chinos, whatever.

They're my go-to shoe when I travel because their comfort + ability to handle a little rain + versatility makes them able to handle pretty much any situation (I pack superlight so having to take a 2nd pair of shoes is something I will avoid at all costs if possible).

They're the jack of all trades, the daltons are much more of a specialist.

AE 2nds sale, just gonna link to reddit because they explain this stuff pretty well.

Definitely interested in some of the RL models if they're only $150...

In the OP: "Ralph Lauren $149"

The list they emailed me confirms there are some sanderson longwings, saunders ankle boots, and slatons in suede in 9.5d for $149.

I was really hoping to see some discontinued bayfields for ~$150, but nada.

I might go for some Cliftons in burgundy, but I think the best deal out there is the fifth avenues for $169. Those weren't part of their sale in September.

Any opinions on the top leather jacket? I'd kind of prefer to spend <$200 on a beater leather jacket than $800 on the bond one that sounds like it won't fit.

IMO leather jackets are worth spending money on if you are going to get one--cheaper ones always look cheaper. I also prefer the racer style (hate leather jackets with collars like you posted).

there is somewhat more utility b/c boots are a bit better in the cold than shoes (less cold air hitting your ankles) and more leather to cover puddles or a few inches of snow on random steps. however in any real weather I'm wearing Bean boots.

Has anyone got this bag? (or one with similar dimensions?)

http://rushfaster.com.au/product/her...grey-tan/7832/

Looking to use it as a travel on bag for flights, so will put laptop (15" mpb), few books, a few pieces of clothing in it just wondering if the size is decent. It seems like a decent bag just looking for something reasonably priced, if anyone has any recommendations that would be appreciated.

Thanks

Have a similar Herschel bag. Only used it once so far but really like it. They seem to make good stuff at the price point.

I have the Herschel Novel duffel which is a tiny bit bigger and has a shoe compartment. I found it for ~$65 and I've never seen anything better in that price range. It's a great size for 2-3 days.

Construction was really good and the leather handles are a nice touch. The canvas is a tad bit on the light side so I don't know that it will last for a decade like something from Filson would. So if you're looking for something you can toss around and not worry about a hole wearing through it might disappoint, but otherwise it should do the job.

My burgundy Unis varsity jacket has arrived. Even on sale, it was a little steep at $350 out the door, but I wanted something in a USC color, was able to get it in XS so it fits me well and I think it could end up being the jacket I wear the most.

Got my Filson original today. Was like $180 something a couple weeks back.

First impressions:

-Happy I didn't get the laptop bag, this is about 20% bigger than I had thought.
-Inner pockets could use a few more compartments.
-Looks cooler w/ strap. Slightly more man pursey (murse?) w/o it.

Overall I am happy and looking forward to see how it breaks in.
