You usually give good advice, but a navy blazer with gold buttons is a terrible choice for what he's looking for. Unless by "going out" he means going to Sunday dinner at the CC or the yacht club.

But if that were the case, he'd definitely already have a blazer.

No, not opposed as that's similar to many of the half zip that don't really go down halfway. I'm asking what people think about this style of sweater in general.

I approve, but then again I'm a bit of a fuddy duddy.

I find them neither terribly offensive nor terribly stylish.

Meh, I can't get a 28 or 29 waist with 30L at JCrew. I would have to get it unhemmed. Now I'm thinking about either these from Bonobos or these from Banana Republic.

Those are both pretty weak. If you're going to spend 88 for those, you might as well bump it up to 135 and get some that are really nice.

I was very impressed with how well built those epaulet chinos are, but they are not slim and they really don't taper at all. I bought one pair that fit perfectly in the waist but was way too boot cut-y in the bottom.

With that being said, I just got my first pair of Bonobos pants yesterday (the premium chinos) and love them. They are built well and fit throughout the legs much better. Also the most comfortable pants I now own; my girlfriend kept rubbing my leg last night because they're so soft. No comment on the regular Bonobos chinos though.

You can also get some Bill's Khakis (M2 and M3 cut) on sierratradingpost for ~$70 with a coupon.

Interesting. They do look pretty nice. Might have to try a pair.

I can send you a referral for $25 your first purchase at Bonobos. PM me your email address.

And I love everything I've gotten from them.

Not sure how slim you like your pants, but I have a thin build and I had to get the bonobos work pants altered because they were too wide. I found that the shirts don't fit well either.... i haven't tried their slim line but hopefully its better because I was about to give up on them.

Those Epaulets are unhemmed as well, so if I'm going to do unhemmed then I can go back to JCrew and get a 28 or 29 waist. Thanks for the info on the Bonobos. Now I'm interested in if anyone knows the difference in quality between the premium and regular Bonobos slim chinos. I got a pair of jeans from Bonobos a few months ago, and while I don't think they are the best jeans ever I've been pleased with the fit and quality of them.

I can't even find any Internet reviews of those Bonobos premium chinos. I think you might be the only person ever to buy them.

i haven't bought any of the premium chinos from bonobos, i think they're relatively new, but i have some of their slacks and some of their regular chinos as well. the fit is amazing and they're super comfy. also, nobody actually pays full price for them, they do have sales from time to time plus you can get referral codes etc.

the one thing i'll say about all their pants is that they are prone to coming out of the dryer a little wrinkly. you may need to touch them up with an iron. but for the 50-60 bucks you will usually pay for them, if you like the fit you will not find a better pair.

Yeah, the jeans I got there were $145 but then 30 percent off. I'd look for another 30 percent off before getting any chinos there. So with the way you liked the bonobos regular chinos, it doesn't seem like the premium would be necessary. It's a pretty big price difference.

Yeah +1 to the regular chinos. Really comfy, and really like the fit, not too skinny but not baggy either (slim fit ldo). Kinda tempted to try the premiums but hard to justify

For you guys with the Bonobos chinos, what do you think of the funky rear pocket lining that's visible in the back?

Any opinions on the Dockers Alpha Khakis? They are another one that get down to my sizing. They seem to be a more rugged material compared to the more refined bonobos. For less than $50, I'm thinking of getting one while I wait for Bonobos to have a deal. They'll complement each other well as pants for different occasions. I'm a little concerned that the Alphas look really wrinkled in every pic I see people post.
