I remember when I was very young in elementary school - I was a pretty good student - pretty smart
but I soon found out there were a few kids much smarter than me
the same thing has happened to me with basketball, blackjack, and playing guitar
good, but nowhere even remotely close to being among the best

it's so very hard to be among the best in anything

that is the nature of competition - the cream rises to the top - and so many are left behind

on the bright side - even without being the best - or even near the best - a person can greatly enjoy stuff like this

I am almost certain that I am the best process control engineer in history, I have been told this on many occasions, so I’m fairly sure that it is true.
Not had very much sex tho’ so swings and roundabouts innit?

I remember a Royal Navy Captain at a reunion speaking about the time in WW2 his ship was torpedoed by a U-boat and after it sank a stoker popping up next to him and uttering a variation of your thread title.
