i know this is just an opinion, and opinions are subjective, but your opinion is objectively wrong.

I agree with Landonfan. Actually i don't think it's the worst book ever, but I couldn't get through it.

edit: just realized that 1984 is one of Landonfan's favorite books (albeit the least of them). Personally it did not make my favorites list.

I'm trying to get back into reading novels -- I'm rereading The Idiot by Dostoevsky, I've read it before but this is supposedly a superior translation.

I'm a pretty big Hemingway fan, but the first 40 pages have been almost completely uninteresting. I'm going to soldier through for a little while, but if it doesn't improve in the next 20-30 pages I'm moving on.

Just finished Blindsight. I dug it.

A Fire Upon the Deep is up next, then I'm going to need more books.

I'm going submit that 1984 is one of those books people seem to brag about but once you read it, you realize no one actually read it. Easily among Orwell's worse.

I don't think so. Most people are forced to read it at some point in school.

wtf 1984 is a genuinely wonderful and pleasurable read. i would actually say its political commentary is no where near as deep as lots of people would have you think (although it makes some amazing points about language), but for reading as entertainment, it is wonderful.

I've basically had the last 3 weeks entirely off, and have had nothing but free time to read books, and I've got a ton of books that I'm in the middle of, trying to finish, trying to get around to, etc.

And I havent done hardly any reading at all but instead have sat around, watched movies, played Xbox and generally just wasted time. Pretty disappointed with myself, I will basically be forced to take the next year off from reading for pleasure, and I wasted my last chance.

I did manage to read Blockade Billy, the new short story by Stephen King, at Borders yesterday. Its this small little hardcover book, priced at LOL$20, that contains the title story and an additional story called Morality. It was decent, I love his short stories, but I read the entire thing, both stories, in just over an hour, so I cannot possibly recommend actually spending $20 on this. Buy a large coffee and read it in store, you will enjoy it I think and if not, its hardly much time wasted. I dont want to give too much analysis because its hard to talk about it and not ruin it. First story is baseball themed, second story is SOMEWHAT like that "pushing the red button" movie that came out recently.

Reading
Imortality Inc. Robert Scheckly - outdated 1959 scifi. Was nominated for Hugo at the time and movie Freejack is loosly based on it. ....only read for history

Did not age well. ....however appartently his books of the 60s were the basic for Hitchhikers Guilde as he "jumped the bounds of genre writing"

Reading this stuff make you realize two things.

- The published bad writing of today is much better than than the bad writing of the 50s.
- writing about the future will always miss the small changes to come, even worse than the big ones.

Just finished 1984. I was surprised but I actually enjoyed it. I found it interesting and made me think without getting TOO deep or metaphorical.

Books our librarian at the high school has recently given away for free because "no one checks 'em out:"

Into Thin Air
Sherlock Holmes
All Asimov fiction
All Willa Cather
Saddhartha
Night
All Camus fiction

She gave these away for free because no one checks them out. Well maybe if you quit recommending Janet Evanovich, Nicholas Sparks, Ellen Hopkins, and manga novels, then we would have students actually reading good literature!

Ugh.

Please don't fall for the hype about how realistic that book is.
I was on a destroyer in the 80s tracking Soviet boomers and that book was nothing short of laughable in parts.

Just finished Straight Man: A Novel by Richard Russo. I really, really enjoyed this book. It was funny and clever while still remaining poignant. It's been awhile since I've read a book that had such a thorough and well-drawn protagonist. Everything about this book was impressive to me from the well-constructed and tight plot to the engaging characters to its sharp (yet sympathetic) satire.

Thanks for the recommendation, John Cole.

okay...i'm fairly ignorant on the subject of military detail so i won't be able to tell the difference. the book is fairly old as well, so hopefully the context isn't lost.

Anyone have a good recommendation for a good, gritty true crime/crime novel book? I'm in the mood to read one but have no clue what to look at. Also any general recommendations would be appreciate since I need a book for an upcoming trip with a looong plane ride. Thanks!
