Yeah you do and yeah it is.

Add to that, some of those basic blues power-chord shuffles require it. Around 2:00 here for an example. Lots of beginners learn this in their first few months (myself included). Like most everything else with guitar it's easy with practice.

Alright!

Looking for something very basic to record to my laptop.

I hear there are decent USB interfaces

I'm waiting for this one in the mail

It's cheap like $30 or so and had decent reviews

Anyone used USB audio interfaces and got recommendations for such equipment, that perhaps allows for a bit more advanced tweaking? Looking to record things such as riffs and simple solos and possibly make backing tracks, as I don't have a band dammit.

Just take an easy song like Rockin' in the Free World, listen to it and play the guitar along with it. Then try to sing while you are playing.

At first you will probably lose track of your guitar playing but don't worry about it. Keep listening, playing and singing. Eventually your brain will find a way to balance everything.

Good luck.

only just found this sub forum. Im new to guitar. been trying to learn for about a year. Bought a cheap acoustic and just been self teaching from youtube/guitartabs etc i think im severely lacking in the theory behind it. I just know some basic chords and strum.

Anyone got any good sites or know of books for improving. Also i feel my strings are kind of high from the neck. Iv tried adjusting the neck with the allen key nut but didnt wana mess around too much incase i broke it. Whats the thoughts on reducing the height of the bridge. Is it advised, is it easy or am i just going to make it uneven and make things worse. suggestions?

Adjust the bridge height and don't screw around with the truss rod adjustment as it has nothing to do with string height, it is only to provide relief to keep the strings from buzzing.

Ultimate Guitar forums

Very good stickies in the subforums. People are very helpful and enthusiastic if you post there, yet in general it's not a forum for total beginners.

You can check out this post which has a lot of links to different sites, tho you will find a LOT of valuable stuff from all sorts of musicians (professional and casuals) on UG

I was also looking at youtube and trying to learn "stuff" online. I've found that lessons from a good teacher trumps the online method significantly. I can learn more from him in 1/2 hour than spending hours clicking and searching randomly for stuff. He tailors the lesson and homework to my current skill level and what I've already learned. I still go online occasionally but that is just to augment what I've learned or to give me ideas on things to ask the teacher.

What about strings for acoustic. Anyone got any suggestions. So far iv just been buying Martin strings. Are strings worth investing in?

There are really very few different string manufacturers, so your choice is mostly between what kind of windings.

For example, bronze wound are very bright; phosphor bronze are less bright; silver-plated copper wound are warm (also soft to the touch), and nickel wound (yes, nickel can be used on acoustics) are warmer.

For gauges (for acoustics), it's best to contact the guitar manufacturer and put the same gauge strings on for intonation purposes. If the guitar was built for 12's and you put 14's on and tune all the open strings perfectly, the guitar will gradually get more and more sharp as you move up the neck.

Decided I wanted to buy a guitar after years of wanting to learn.

Bought the guitar.

But damn these fat fingers. After only an hour, pretty convinced I'll never be able to play a proper chord lol.

All I've accomplished so far is a blister and mute mute mute mute mute mute mute. Please tell me this is how everyone starts.

that is how everyone starts it has nothing to do with the size of your fingers keep at it etc

i'd suggest making sure you have correct posture - especially with your fretting hand - not arching your fingers enough is probably a big amount of what makes starting hard.

also, cut your damn nails you hippy.

it'll get easier as your finger tips get harder.

Did you know you can use the telephone to tune your guitar? True story. A dial tone is a perfect E.

I have really good pitch but I don't think it's perfect. idk though.

I think I can get really close by listening to voodoo child slight return in my head and matching that imo.

Yeah, I'm gonna have to say you don't have perfect pitch, being that a dial tone is two frequencies and neither of them are E.
