Which beers are like Newcastle? Which beers are like Newcastle?

12-21-2010 , 11:18 AM
I've only recently become a beer drinker. A friend introduced me to Newcastle and I've been drinking it for a few months. It tastes good to me, which is surprising since I've hated pretty much every beer I've ever tried.

I'd like to try some other brown ales. Maybe find another beer I like.

Can anyone name a few worth sampling?

This should probably have been in the TLDR Beer Club thread, but I'll throw you a few. Newcastle is an English Brown ale, all the ones I am going to throw out are American Brown ales that I enjoy.

Dogfish Head India Brown Ale

Moose Drool Brown Ale

Smuttynose Old Brown Dog

Sierra Nevada Tumbler Autumn Brown Ale

An English Brown Ale from America, similar to Newcastle:

Lost Coast Downtown Brown

For future reference, you will get looked at like a sex criminal if you call it "Newcastle" in the UK :P

what temperature did you drink it at? It affects the flavour a lot, and so what beers you like would depend on the temperature you enjoyed drinking it at.

Don't know exactly. Average fridge temperature.

fridge temperature is colder than newcastle brown is normally served at. this means it will have a weaker flavour.

that suggests to me that you like the taste of ale, but not too strong and at a cold temperature. that is basically what blond ale was made for:

better drinking that than faffing about with brown ale at the wrong temperature imo

Actually, sometimes Newcastle tastes too bitter for me.

Are all brown ales moderately bitter? Are blonde ales less bitter?

all beer is at least a little bitter. blonde ales are usually a little sweeter, and all beer tastes less bitter when it is more cold.

I'll keep that in mind next time I'm across the pond (did I get that right?), but I think the same might happen if I called it that here.

So Newkey Brown is less gay then New Castle? You Euro's are a bit strange with your speak sometimes then again you call cigarette's **** so I should be surprised.

OP I personally like Blue Moon it's a good smooth beer and not very bitter. It's also not a Brown Ale though. It's a Belgium White Wheat Ale. I prefer it without the orange peel.

OP - not sure where you are and what's distributed in your area, but if you can get it I recommend Cigar City if you're feeling adventurous. In this case, that would be the Maduro Oatmeal Brown Ale

Coff's suggestions are very good. The Sierra Nevada should be widely available regardless of region.

You'll ask for a bottle of dog if you want to be really hip and cool.

If you enjoyed the Newcastle, I would suggest trying a Bass Ale; it is a bit stronger, not as "sweet", a bit murkier. It's a great old school ale that defies the current trend of super sweet micro brewery flavored ales. Cheers.

Newcastle is my favorite too. I also like Negro Modelo, so maybe you will too.

NB is also known as electric soup, lunatics broth, loopy juice etc. Drink seven or eight and it's rubber sheet time!

Thanks for all the replies.

Newcastle's bitter enough sometimes that I make that scrunched up bitter beer face after taking a swig. I had one last night with a sandwich and chips and I could only drink 2/3 the bottle. Had to pour the rest in the sink.

I don't know if this is still me adjusting to the taste of beer in general or if Newcastle is the wrong beer for my palette.

As tm said, call it a 'Newcastle' in the UK, they'll think you're a simpleton.

Smithwicks is awesome imo. (don't pronounce the "w" though) more like smid-icks or something like that. It's Irish.

Weird. I can't think of any american beer that isn't called by anything but it's actual name. In fact I can't think of any product at all that would get weird looks if you referred to it by it's given name.
