Mullen,

AleSmith has some good stouts. Ballast point victory at sea you'd prob like. Ballast point and societe have a lot of good beers. He may be able to get some good Bruery beers.

If he's enough of a beer guy to bother trading to get some BCBS I'd prob just ask him to pick some of his favorite cali stuff for you.

Its pretty easy to get Victory At Sea in NYC. Many of the bigger brewers in SD have good distribution in The City. Alesmith, especially if he can get some of their barrel aged offerings, is a good option for stouts. Modern Times makes some pretty good stouts and saisons that you'd likely enjoy. I also agree any beer from Societe would be a good choice. It doesn't sound like you are into IPAs, but I know if I were trading with someone from SD my #1 option would be to get IPAs from Alpine or Societe.

You could get a Black Tuesday for a large volume of BCBS, I'd reckon. Could also get like 3 -ation beers from Russian River. Agree that Speedway by Alesmith would be a good choice as well and can confirm that you should not trade for Victory at Sea. It's distributed all over and the price you will pay for shipping from NY to Cali will make it awful all around.

He offered to trade for some, what's an equivalent beer he could trade me for that you guys would recommend (open to having basically anything). San Diego area.
+1

I think I was just tipped off to a location with tons of the stuff just sitting. Never would have suspected they even had it. Will report back in a day or two.

Picked up Lagunitas Brown Shugga today after a friend was raving about it. Cant say I dig this. Maybe it's just a style thing, but I had a hard time sipping on one....don't really want the other 5 😞

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. Went to a local beer distributor today and picked up a few things that you guys recommended. Picked up -

BCBS
Ballast Victory at Sea
Bell's Expedition Stout
Alesmith Speedway Stout
North Coast Old Rasputin
Founders Backwoods Bastard

Think that should hold me over for awhile. Currently drinking the Victory at Sea and it's excellent.

How in the hell have I just noticed this thread? Has Tank 7 been mentioned yet? Tripel Karmeliat?

Anyone care to share their opinion on Zombie Dust?

I found a clone recipe for it when searching for home brew recipes for citra pale ale. People on brewing forums seem to rave about it but I'm unlikely to find a bottle in the UK to taste the real stuff myself.

It's very, very good... But I wouldn't cry if I never had it again.

I never understood the fascination for it. I love, love, love Alpha King, but Zombie Dust didn't really stand out as an "I've got to have it" ale.

I've had Zombie Dust a few times and have no idea what the hype is. Though I think the same thing about Trillium Fort Point Pale Ale - people love it but to me it just tastes like an unhoppy IPA. shrug.

I tried Founders CBS tonight. liked it a lot. love the maple syrup + stout. I had Good Morning from Treehouse brewing a few weeks back and thought it was just as good or better though - just evidence that beer isn't THAT complicated, but fresh beer is great and it's not that hard for dedicated local guys to make super high quality stuff if they are so inclined.

am definitely in favor of the "drink local" movement

First time I had Zombie Dust I loved it. I still think its very good, but I've since had many IPAs that take Zombie Dust off the radar of best American IPAs. I'd still drink the hell out of it if I had good access to it.

I'm also moving a bit more into the 'drink local' movement if for convenience if nothing else. New York has some decent local breweries, but I don't think the brewery scene is nice enough here to completely drink locally. If I still lived in CO, or lived anywhere in CA I would be 100% contented drinking almost completely local unless some out of state whale just fell into my lap.

Cool, I will brew it up in a couple of months once we get back to temperatures conducive for fermentation. Am itching to have a batch of citra-heavy pale in the cellar.

I am definitely in agreement with the drink local ethos. Most beer I drink is made in my kitchen so you don't get much more local than that. Working my way through a wickedly smooth porter atm

Finally had a proper Sculpin. This is kind of hard to find and the one time I had it, I was very underwhelmed. Turned out hat it was an old bottle. Just found fresh bombers that are 2 weeks old. What a difference! Damn tastie!

Perennial Artisan AlesCoffee Abraxas-Imperial Stout with coffee (tapping 6pm)
Ugh. I fear I'm going to end up buying more stout.

I went around 7:30 and apparently bottles were already sold out. It's a little annoying how popular these CBS releases are now.

Tried coffee Abraxas on draft, was suuuuper delicious (I've had regular from a bottle in the past).

Whenever I got back to Colorado I always make sure to stop by my favorite bottle shop because they'll post their limited releases at 1pm the day they get them. About a year ago I remember texting one of my friends who worked near the shop to pick me up a specific bottle when they got off work, and they said they sold out within an hour. When I was in town for GABF, I was there at 1pm the day I knew they were going to release some beer I really wanted, and at least 8-10 other people arrived at the same time to pick up a bottle. Needless to say the 1-2 cases they probably got vanished immediately.

Goofy,

I was there at 7 and they said they had a line at 6 that was more than the allocation they had. I tried both on draft, coffee was very good, but I thought the coffee overpowered the other flavors. Regular had a lot more going on, could taste a hint of chili heat and some cherry fruit that reminded me of BCS backyard rye. I look at this like I just saved $45.

They also had a huge stock of cascade. Damn, $48 for the Manhattan NW!

Tempted to grab a Cranberry. Anyone had it?

I had my first go at the Bourbon County Stout. Tbh, it's a little too much for me. Not that it's too boozy, just too intense. I love stouts, but don't think I'd get this again....which is good for my wallet.

Also, going to NEBCO today to get growlers of Gandhi Bot and prob the new smoked porter. Woohoo!

Yeah the regular was incredible when I had it before, figured I'd try the coffee. Side by side I can see how the coffee would hide a lot of the crazy flavors of the normal version but on its own I think it's a really tasty, more mellow/roasty kind of stout that still has a lot of the interesting things of the regular going on.

Healthy Spirits had a healthy Cascade supply also, including $55 (!!!) Bourbonic Plague.
