I expect the UK to be sick in four years. I think 60 medals is totally achievable and 70 is possible (though unlikely).

Brits looked good in the men's 4x400 relay qualifying. Should be a good race.

Probably belongs in the other thread but that Jamaican team is SICK.

i'm not mad that we're losing. imo a lot of countries stepped up and outdid the U.S. in areas where we traditionally win, and we've had a lot of tough breaks in many events. and china's just done well. even the dream team can't win every game. see if they can do it again in 2012.

and too, i think too many people mistake competition for thinking one country is better in general. china winning the olympics means just that: they were better at the olympics in 2008, no more no less. i don't suddenly want to move to china because its a better country than the u.s.

(grunch)

I have no idea if this was posted before, but the Telegraph did some legwork on the medal-standings story. It seems as though the Associated Press (which most of the US press gets their standings) has been compiling the medal count by total medals for at least the last six Olympics before this one, back to 1996.

Olympic Tae Kwon Do judging

Quote:

...Matos’ bad behavior followed a day of confusion on the mats and ended the four-day taekwondo competition, which was marred by several protests against judge’s calls.

Earlier Saturday, China’s double gold medalist Chen Zhong crashed out in the quarterfinals after initially being declared the winner.

World champion Maria del Rosario Espinoza, the eventual winner in the women’s over 67-kilogram (147.4 pounds) class, was to fight Chen in the semifinals but the judges overturned an earlier ruling and made Britain’s Sarah Stevenson the winner of the quarterfinal bout in which Chen scored in the closing seconds of the second round and then Stevenson tagged her with a head kick—worth two points—in the third.

The judges ruled Stevenson’s kick wasn’t solid enough for points, and Chen was declared the winner 1-0. After Britain protested, the result was changed to put Stevenson in the semifinal.

The decision brought loud jeers from the crowd. China did not appeal.

It was the first time a match result has been overturned since taekwondo became an official Olympic sport in 1990.

Yeah, that lack of points for the headshot was just ridiculous.
