It's time to get in the Christmas spirit! It seems get harder to accomplish every year? I am commiting to watching at least one Christmas movie every day from now until Christmas. The younger you are the more Christmassy Christmas season seems. And the older you get? It seems like it comes and goes before you even realize it.

Anyway a Friday night, a couple of cocktails and a Christmas movie seems like a real plan to me right now.

I haven't seen them--I really should get to Yale--but I know of them.

they are each worth a visit, along with the Kimbell in ft worth

variations upon a theme
planes artfully composed around a void to be inhabited
location of solids creating the bounds of space
cracks between the means to egress
while grazing sunlight accentuates every surface texture

deafening simplicity

This is on Criterion now. I saw it twenty years ago at the now closed Cable Car in Providence.

Khan was a great Star Trek villain.

Not a bad Jungle Book villain either.

Villains make the world interesting and worthwhile. It’s the sobbing world savers that need to be beaten to death.

Johnny Coles is a jazz trumpeteer with amazing chops
poached eggs with hollandaise is a classic brunch recipe with limited side options

Heavy rain and wind gusts over 70 mph. It's nice to have a front row seat without leaving the house.

There is a great restaurant over looking the Pacific Ocean in my home town; it’s a great place to have a martini and watch the waves crashing on the beach.

I would love to have a drink and listen to the wind and the waves, but I would need someone to drink with.

You haven't seen anything until you've seen a faculty executive committee meeting.

The aquarium in Monterey has a great bar that's perfect for just that.

Yesterday's storm here left many without power and other problems. My daughter, who is still recovering from COVID, texted me to say half the basement was flooded and water was dripping through the kitchen light fixture.

About a half hour later she lets me know the refrigerator isn't working. I asked her why and she said, "Because everything is ****ing awful."

Sounds more like a mechanical problem than an existential one, but I did help raise her, so that explains a lot.

Apparently I will need to start a new thread since it's the longest night of the year. But I'm almost slightly intoxicated after dinner at my friend's house with my two girl friends and a couple bottles of Sancerre. After one left, we hung out drinking and talking for a couple hours. Her 22 year old daughter even joined us for an hour. So just a nice, comfortable, relaxed evening.

And, fortunately, we only live a mile from each other, so it's an easy drive home, even after a couple bottles of wine.

I promise to start a new thread tomorrow, and I miss Ray Zee exhorting me to get going already.
