This thread is about shot. If you have some songs you like that you think might be New Wave, post them! The definition of New Wave will not be on the test.

There's a documentary on Instant Netflix now that follows Glenn Tilbrook on a concert tour. One for the Road.

I'm sorry, but no way do I extend the definition to include Siouxsie and the Banshees.

They were at least post-punk or pre-goth or neo-...something, but not new wave.

There are a LOT of people who would (justifiably) disagree with you here. By that, I meant they've at least put some thought into that opinion (not that I'm saying you haven't, just that there are some acts that will blur the lines).

okay, Bobby J and klaus nomi were just freaking weird.

Cryme is kind of taking it more towards punkish but there was a fair amount of cross-over there I guess.

And we already have 3 mentions of the Psych Furs in this thread to kind of drive that punk/new-wave mesh thing home and catch my attention since they were my favorite band back in the day and I'm a little bit knowledgeable.

Once upon a time the Psych Furs were more punkish or post-punk or whatever the hell they started as and not really new wave. Their 6-piece line-up for their first two albums was awesome including some interesting experimental blending with sax with the post-punk that definitely does not sound like it was made 30 freaking years ago.

Two of my favorite songs from each of their first two albums:

We Love You
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mDoyK9Dx4_o

India (takes awhile before the actual song starts)

Into You Like a Train

All of This and Nothing

Back to truer New Wave:

Always preferred Space Age Love Song by Flock of Seagulls to I Ran:

If you don't like Dance Hall Days there is something wrong with you:

The Go Go's - Our Lips are Sealed (way underrated band imo)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SEU5vXmE5mU

Kim Carnes - Kids in America (one of my favorite songs at the time along with Pop Musik by M)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-hWZqllm3mQ

The Church - Under the Milky Way (I think this counts)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Q6nKP10j4s

Modern English - Melt with You (really cliche because it's so popular...but it was a really good freakin song)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LuN6gs0AJls

The Cure - 10:15 Saturday Night (once really cliche to like this song...today fewer and fewer people even know about it)

Attack of those wacky Euros!!!!

Nena - 99 Luft Balloons

Falco - Der Kommisar
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_w4Xulsjo5I

Also - some mentions of New Order in this thread. I was never really a fan of them but Age of Consent I thought was an awesome song that never got as much attention as it deserved:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ahU-x-4Gxw

And a decent modern cover of it:

Now officially known as "the Geico song"

Exactly.

I know everyone will say that the definition of New Wave is mercurial or subjective or whatever, but come on--no chance The Jim Carroll Band was a New Wave Band. I guess Patty Smith and The Velvet Underground were New Wave too.

Of course, this can go on forever, though.

Because, well, because the definition is mercurial.

Oh yeah--and subjective, too.

Pretty sure these qualify:

The Waitresses - I know What Boys Like

Howard Jones - No One is to BlameYazoo - Only You

Last edited by TomE.; 08-31-2009 at 02:40 PM. Reason: Yazoo! How could I forget Yazoo? Although I thought it was just "The Yaz".

It's funny, I think Blondie were New Wave and The Police weren't but I have no idea why.
