Round 5, Pick #2 (#61 Overall)

Spoiler:
The Truman Show (1998, Peter Weir)

The Truman Show basically showcases the life of a man who is unaware he is living in a fake reality, and that his life is being staged for the entertainment of millions of television viewers 24/7 across the world.

The story is emotional and comical. It masterfully blends physical humor and powerful emotional story-lines.

The character of Truman Burbank is truly remarkable - Chosen out of five unwanted pregnancies and the first child to be legally adopted by a corporation. He is unaware that his daily life is broadcast 24 hours a day around the world. He has a job in the insurance business and a lovely wife, but he eventually notices that his environment is not what it seems to be.

So the journey begins and the audience is taken on a ride of discovery and a quest for knowledge and freedom. I can't remember another movie where I was so emotionally invested into the lead character and his struggle.

Ed Harris delivers an excellent performance as the shows creator and antagonizing force.

Laura Linney and Natascha McElhone add amazing depth to the story as Truman's romantic counterparts. Specifically, McElhone as she does an outstanding job as an extra on the Truman Show who fell in love with Truman and tries to tell him what is really going on.

The script was also penned by Gattaca writer/director Andrew Nicholl, so you know with the Truman Show you are a getting an inventive and totally unique story.

The Truman show has it all - it will make you laugh, it may make you cry, above all else it will entertain you and take you for one hell of a ride.

I am proud to select The Truman Show for my 5th round pick.

Round 5 pick #62

Tombstone George P.Cosmatos 1993

The story of Wyatt Earp, his brothers, Doc Holliday, the Clanton gang and the Cowboys. This story has been told countless times in many movies. Lots of action, interesting characters, good story and outstanding and quotable dialog.

What makes this version really stand out is the incredible cast and in particular Val Kilmers Doc Holiday. Kilmer is given outstanding dialog which he delivers perfectly. I consider his performance in this role as a top 10 performance of all time.

- The Silence of the Lambs
- Glengarry Glen Ross
- True Romance
- Boyz N the Hood
- Tombstone

YES! This was the movie I was referring to earlier when I said one film is falling way too far. Yeah, it's not Goodfellas but it's a damn good movie! This dropped way too low. Sick value!

yeah kinda shocked it fell so low as well, more epic in scope than goodfella's, i think it get's ignored bit just because it rehashed so many of the same themes, but it's no less of an awesome movie...

If Goodfellas was never made, Casino would have gone top 15.

I thought she was terrific, despite completely loathing her character.

Feels right about here. Could have maybe gone higher but I haven't seen a lot of the obscure films listed so far.

Office Space
is amazing. That generation's Caddyshack. Mike Judge is a ****ing genius.

I remember the first time I saw it I thought it was too dry and slow and didn't really click with me. Then, the more I worked in Corporate America the more I realized just how ****ing spot-on this film is. Hilarious.

There are just so many great movies left. I'm having a hard time choosing. This draft will end and there are still gonna be a ton of great undrafted movies.

This could have easily gone 20 rounds and it still wouldn't feel like you're just picking the dregs.

I liked The Game but that was an overdraft imo. Tombstone was better value purely because of Kilmer.

Although The Game includes one of the all-time great quotes you can drop in a lot of situations:

Spoiler:
Sean Penn flipping out: THEY JUST **** YOU AND THEY **** YOU AND THEY **** YOU, AND JUST WHEN YOU THINK IT'S ALL OVER, THAT'S WHEN THE REAL ****ING STARTS!

i think they were both taken too high, but it's all subjective and depends what you value more in drafting... both entertaining, the game is very well done, tombstone was ok...

Ryan and mrbaseball have the wrong number picks again. Sum one to your picks and then they will be all right. When it is an odd round it is easier to know the number of your pick If you are pick 2, then the pick is 62 if you are pick 3, then it is 63. If the last digit doesn't match your pick within the round, it means you made a mistake. In the even rounds then the last digit should be 5 + your round digit (so pick 2 in an odd round should end in 7).

I still haven't picked one of my favorite movies because it doesn't have critical acclaim, so I will save it one more round. For now, I pick one of the first movies I loved. It came out in 1991 and I watched it many times as a kid. The movie I am taking for round 5 is Point Break. I will do the write up a bit later.

Round 5
Pick #5 (#65 overall)

Point Break by Kathryn Bigelow (1991)

I will admit, I am choosing this by going with my gut. I haven't seen this movie in at least a decade, but I have very fond memories of this movie.

In the movie, there's an undercover cop (Keanu Reeves) who infiltrates a group of bank robbers led by a very charismatic guy (Patrick Swayze). The cop and the rogue become friends and the dilemma of friendship over duty comes into play. The themes might not be deep now, but they were deep when I was 7.

The movie also happens to have a lot of really good action scenes. Even though I haven't seen this movie in a long, long time, I still remember one of the chase scenes where Swayze barely gets through a fence and Keanu doesn't make it. Keanu has to decide whether he'll shoot or not. Unforgettable scene for me. I also remember the ocean at the end.

All around, a fantastic action movie that I want to watch again soon, so might as well draft it, maybe this will motivate me to watch it this weekend (it worked with Matchstickmen on the 2000s draft).

The Matrix Wackowski brothers (1999)
12 Monkeys Terry Gilliam (1995)

I went to the 2000s thread to update the spreadsheet and then accidentally did my write up over there. Glad to know the spreadsheet is now here too.
