I needed binoculars to see things up close. Went to Jessops on the Strand to sample their various options. Spying on people in the McDonalds across the street, I felt the 8x24 Nikon Travel Lite set was the best option - £84.95 only, seemed a bargain.

I called the guy over and noted an entry on the display ticket: "also available in 10x25". These ones weren't on display, but the guy said they were in stock and fetched them for me. I told him "I will take these" as the magnification was even greater - like I could see the sesame seeds on top of the burger buns.

Taking them to the girl at the till she asked me for £94.95. I told her "no, dear. They are £84.95, as per the ticket". She called the guy to bring the ticket and explained that £84.95 only applied to the 8x24 set not the 10x25 (even though 10x25 were on the same ticket as the 8x24 and there was no specific ticket out for the 10x25s!)

I yelled that this was little more than a scam and they were getting none of my custom. She told me to suit myself and I stormed out!

Later bought a set of Bushnells in the Middlesex Shop - only £68. Magnification is variable from 7x - 15x so this is a bonus. During play, I set them to 7x zoom for a wide angle of play, and between balls and overs I put them on 15x to look at the batsman faces and the bowlers to note if sledging or fun is being had at the crease. Also, sitting in the pavilion or Middlesex Room, I can use them on maximum magnification and look up at the Media Centre to see Kevin Hand providing the commentary for BBC Radio London.

[x] Bastard ??????

Hard to have symapthy for a peeping Tom. Unless you are a birdwatcher.

Yeah, I would rather pretend to be a peeping Tom than admit to watching birds.

You english have really small cricket fields and all the birds are really ugly imo.

So what's the real reason you need the binoculars?

Op is a brit. Birdwatching is quite acceptable, if not preferred.

Not only did Jessop's not scam you, you scamed yourself. It's completely standard for 10x25 to cost more than 8x24 - they require different prisms. If a ticket says something is also for sale that doesn't mean also at the same price. It just means it is another similar product you might enjoy. I could make a stupid analogy, but that would be stupid and probably wouldn't convince you that you are wrong.

At no pricepoint are Bushnell's the best value for money. The Nikon binos sound a lot better to me. Although I haven't looked through that model it's the brand I chose for a pair of 10x50 at a slightly higher price. I am thinking of upgrading to Nikon Monarch though; lightweight, compact, and again I feel the best optics in their price range.

10x is too high of magnification for a cricket match. It can be hard to watch quick moving, unpredictable action, although I suppose if you were far enough away 10x would be good, especially with a wider field of view. Variable magnification binos are usually pretty gimmicky/bad too - one more crappy part to interfere with your vision.

Hopefully it is not too late for you to return these and get a pair with better optics and better suited to what you will use them for. Before you do that I highly recommend that you go look through a pair of Zeiss or Swarovski binoculars so you can know what counting the sesame seeds on top of bun is really like. I looked through approximately 50 pairs of binos from $50-$2000 before choosing mine (around $160), and I recommend you do the same.

I hope you don't think I'm a jerk if i was too harsh. I just want you to know a bit more about binoculars so you don't buy crummy ones and abuse store clerks.

This is funny. I imagine it done wearing 19th century costumes and a lot of huffing.

I think I'll start speaking this way:
"Please to be returning my custom, oh canine that is female"!

I imagined John Cleese yelling at the older woman with purplish hair in the Are You Being Served series.

LOL and this should be followed by:

"Dear Sir! I sincerely wish that thou shall attempt to procure an offspring from the very womb that bore thee! "
