Also, Googling reveals that Rule 34 definitely applies here.

Well, in the absence of a specific instruction, man is likely to make some pretty hilarious ****ing choices.

First
3 ring binder, or inexpensive tab folder are best.
Next
Loose in a folder with tension clip top-centre, or left side 1/2 inch from top.
Last
But, if you have to put one of those hideous devices in my papers, it had better angled forward.

So many variables (not including staple alignment).
What kind of papers? Drawings, photos, menus, schedules, poems, essays, notes, bills...?
What size is the page? Are all pages the same size?
Will they be used in the future, or are you binding them just to keep them as a collection?
Are they official legal documents?
Will the progression (first page to last) be constant, or will some sort of shuffle be upcoming?
Single sided?

Bills are stapled top, left with horizontal orientation (-).
Something I've written and will be maintained in the current order and referenced, top, right with"angled backward" (\) placement. I'm right handed, so this allows my single sided document to be read through, held in my left hand, with the already examined sheets dangling out of the way of current/upcoming pages.
Photos don't get stapled.
Legal documents don't get stapled.
LOL, poetry.
Drawings may or may not get stapled.
Sheets larger than letter can benefit from more than one staple, usually along the short side, in a linear array (- - -).

Colors are a nice touch, when considering stapling. I have dark blue staples in my home office stapler. I kept green in my worksite stapler. I kept a smaller stapler in my desk drawer with red staples. Colors lend to trackability, locating, and quickly show you if someone has removed the original staple.

I hope this helps.

have you ever urinated in a kitchen sink?

(could be any kitchen sink; doesn't have to be yours. it could be your mom's kitchen sink, or an employee's.. it doesn't matter. you could have been invited to dinner at one of your employee's homes and, after realizing you were the only one there wearing a suit, became uncomfortable and excused yourself only to find yourself alone in the kitchen, and not wanting to drunkenly open random doors and further embarrass everyone, relieved yourself there quietly without anyone knowing.)
