Both fubared and fubar'd should be considered correct, since the apostrophe in fubar'd would be replacing an 'e' anyways.

Regardless, I've always believed it should be spelled fub-r, because what's the 'a' doing in there anyways?

75 for an oil change isn't a ripoff if you use synthetic oil and go to jiffy lube. i mean, it is a rip off, but its a normal price.

why do you think you get scammed? the best way i can think of to not get scammed is to get an estimate from more than one place, and/or go to a dealer or someone you can trust and go to them every time.

I went to Midas and Dobbs and both places refused to give me an estimate. Midas just gave me the run around and never called me back. Dobbs said they'd have to hook it up and run diagnostics which would cost $95.

F***ed Up Beyond All Recognition.

Also dont go to those big car repair places. Find a smaller one that has room to work on 2 or 3 cars, and always seems to have 8 cars in line to get work done. They dont have time to **** you over. They just need to fix whats wrong and get you back to pick up your car.

Anyone who would suggest fubared is pronounced fooba-red is absolutely, utterly, and eternally ******ed.

Seriously, what the hell is with people?

No way. All he needs are new muffler bearings and a simple fuel line alignment.

Dobbs just called me with the estimate. They said the motor mounts were actually fine, but that I busted a line in my AC and they have to call the dealership and order the part. Also, all my fluids for the AC had leaked out, obviously. They said it'd be around $400.

How much did I just get scamded?

That actually sounds about right for fixing the AC unit. Most work on an AC unit is a bitch and takes time just to get other things out of the way. If you need a new compresser that is actually really cheap. If the line is easily accessable then you are getting ****ed but I would say that is about average for AC work.

Nice! That makes me feel a bit better, but paying $400 is still a bitch.

I would end up boning her sans condom, so I better just stay away from all females at this point in my life.

Just a quick update on this:

$465 later and two trips to Dobbs, the car was fixed... for about two days. I put maybe 20 miles on it from the time Dobbs "fixed" it and now the Check Engine light is on and it sputters sometimes. I took it to Dobbs again, because I'm thinking they ****ed something up. We'll see how it goes. I'm pretty sure I'm cursed, afaik.

Where do you live, kcb? I live in a small city that has nothing really for about an hour to the west. By driving 20 min west to the middle of nowhere, I found a mechanic that charges about 1/3 of what the dealership charges. Also, it seems that it's standard that you pay about the same in parts as in labor, on average (no science here, just what I've gathered from talking to a bunch of people about it). The dealership near me is often twice as much in labor as in parts (I won't even get into how they charge X hours labor for a given job, so that when they do 4 things to my car, and I have my car back in 2 hours, I am getting charged for 8 hours labor because that's what the book says...), and the mechanic I found has always charged less in labor than in parts.

YMMV, obviously, but when I got an estimate of "You have to replace front and back ball joints for like 1100 and some sort of pump for 600" from the dealership, and the mechanic said that front ball joints were fine and pump was fine (sweating but not leaking and ridiculous to replace until it worsened), and did rears for 235, I decided to stick to the mechanic.
