The threads are not going to be deleted.
The threads are going to be archived.
They will be viewable here once the archive process takes place.

Please stop bumping old LC/NC threads.

You should consider a new hobby.

Do you play any musical instruments?

they're not NC/LC, they're classic, historical threads.

When all the threads are archived, they will not be accessible. You can read them, but come on, it's like throwing them away never to be seen again.

Having a thread available in the archives is nothing like having it available to post in. I am 100% behind the bumping of the classic threads. It'll make the forum hard to read for a few weeks, but it'll pay long term dividends.

I remember the last migration. Good threads got left behind, and when logical bumping times came around, the threads weren't there. It hurt the continuity of the forums in the long run imo.

EDIT: Also, I'm pretty sure that the archive servers will not be searchable from the same form as the main active forums, which will make finding old threads a nightmare.

This is a very important point.

twoplustwo relies on content. The less content that transfers over to the new forum, the worse it is. You don't want to lose all your content when transferring over, you want to try to preserve as much as you can.

This was posted in the Mod Forum and Mat said it was ok to share:

Redirects will be used as necessary to preserve not only the links on the live forums, but also backlinks on other websites, as well as any bookmarks that you have.

You do not need to bump threads that have links to them in stickies - the links will still work, just take you to the archived thread. If they are linked to in a sticky chances are that you want them migrated to the live forums anyway, so bumping may not have been a waste of time.

Yes we will be adding yet another archive - and it will be listed on the archive page along with the others.

Man, I really wish that I still had my mod forum access. But since I don't I will give my best guess as to what the discussion in there looks like:

Mat/Kiera: OK, guys. We're doing this archive thing.

Everyone: What? Why? Details?

Mat: Because of [technical reason that doesn't seem to make sense and isn't ever adequately explained].

Everyone: OK, but do we have to do it quickly? It'd be nice to be able to give people a chance to think of important threads to bump.

Mat: I don't think we should make announcements. I don't want a lot of bumping.

Everyone: [Continued push back against the plan as it exists.]

Mason: Blah blah blah best wishes.

Mat: Also this is Ryan Beal's fault.

how many people actually go surfing through the archives? Like on a semi regular basis? I sure as hell don't. I think I've seen them like ... three times maybe.

how bad would it suck if the thread cat thread or the lathe thread or Galfond's well were archived and not live on the forums?

threads being archived is not the same as having threads stay. you cant post in them, cant search for them with current threads, its not the same and anyone who thinks so doesnt remember how much it sucked the last time.

It is my understanding that old OMG3x threads are going to be archived.

BUMP THE FIRST ONE!!!!

Seriously, please do this. OMG was honestly a big part of my life for a long time. And I'm sure LirvA would say the same. And other great and terrible posters of the past and present. It's generated over ONE MILLION goddamn posts. Virtually none of those posts are very memorable, but the collective experience is very memorable to those of us who have posted there over the years. And it'd be nice to have the start of the whole shebang stay with us. And that is this thread, which predates the OMG forum and thus is in BBV4Life proper. It's locked, so a mod would have to bump it to get it onto the new software. And I wish that you would.

all omgs should be freed

i still dont understand why the first one needed to be locked considering SE has 100K post threads that dont break the site

yeah because the old archives are very readable and navigable. the lc/nc seems pretty subjective, a lot of us find some of the threads we are bumping to be funny and valuable to the community. so unless you guys plan to expand the hof in the near future, i don't see any convenient way of bringing others' attention to older threads.

This really shouldn't be that hard ... bump a couple you think are worthy. Don't bump ****ing garbage.

Here are some examples of ****ing garbage that was bumped recently:

But the garbage is what makes this 4L. One of the candidate names for this forum, back before it existed, was "The Trash Can" or something similar. That's our legacy, man.

Can't they just archive the forums where old threads don't matter like all the strat forums/POG and not archive the forums that contain many classic threads?
