Playing single deck (3/2 blackjack) at Binion's last night. Good times. I cut the cards, get dealt two fours. Split, get another four, split, get the last four. I have all four 4's spread out in front of me before any of my four hands even has a 2nd card dealt. WTF are the odds of that I ask?

Brag: Won all four hands
Beat: Only $10/hand
Variance: No clue if I should be splitting 4's against a 5 anyways.

If you play "by the book" you don't split 4s.

Average dealer hand if he doesn't bust > 18, that's why.

Multiple splits in a single deck game? Odd.

I used to play blackjack way too much and have seen many, many basic strategy charts (it's where my screen name comes from). But that's the first time I've seen a chart where 4s should be split, unless you take counting into account. I haven't played regularly in many years though, so I wonder if that's a somewhat new change to basic strategy.

There are plenty of charts out there that don't say to split.

that is what i was always taught too. never split 4,5, 10's imo. unless counting of course. but it could've changed over the years too. :shrugs:

Like I said it varies depending on the game rules. The point though, is that even when the rules say you shouldn't do it, it's still a very small -ev error to do so. So you can't call him an idiot for such a borderline decision.

Oh and that card is from the main blackjack page of Wizard of Odds and he knows his ****. Don't disparage the card.

If you're looking to get more money out there why not double down for an 18 instead of two fours?
