Beat: Downloaded GIMP and I can't even open it Beat: Downloaded GIMP and I can't even open it

Now I consider myself a pretty smart person and not completely computer illiterate, so it really pains me to have to admit this. I downloaded GIMP but it didn't create a desktop icon, and when I go to Start and search gimp it only brings me to this

which in turn leads to more and more files, none of which I sure actually opens the program. Like I say, this is pretty embarassing, but I'm prepared to wade through the **** ton of flaming I'm obviously going to get if I can get one useful piece of advice. Anyone?

try hitting it

click on "extract to" to unpack archive, for one.

What does that do?
09-10-2009 , 08:48 PM
unpacks the downloaded file to a directory that Windows will recognize. It should create a file folder called "GIMP" or "GIMP 2" or something.

Possibly the greatest beat of all....

I usually solve all of my computer related problems by googlig my query and eventually gathering enough info to get me through, but this problem is so ludicrously basic that no one has ever thought to write anything on the subject. I mean opening your program is the next step up from switching on your computer.

Download the one with the installer ldo.

I know I said in the OP that I'm not completely illiterate. Just imagine for a moment a hypothetical situation, if you will, where I am completely computer illiterate. Like perhaps you're explaining it to a 5 year-old child who's never used a computer before and you have to describe every single action in detail.

bonds,

I did the "extract to" thing and I'm no closer to knowing how to open this thing.

you might get a better answer in CTH, btw.

What browser are you using?

Did it work for a while, extracting files?
09-10-2009 , 09:14 PM
Yeah I should probably cross-post this.
09-10-2009 , 09:15 PM
make sure the file is highlighted then hit extract which should bring up a window asking you where to send it, just choose desktop for the easiest route imo

you should also be able to see if there is anything in the folder by double clicking it

The files were extacted to a folder. There's still like a billion sub-folders and I'm lost.

okay, hang on for just a minute. I found an old archive on my computer and I'm up to the unpacking step:

09-10-2009 , 09:22 PM
right click on the folder, click search, and type either setup or .exe and that should get you somewhere
09-10-2009 , 09:25 PM
this is pretty embarassing
09-10-2009 , 09:28 PM
tough problem u gimp
09-10-2009 , 09:33 PM
Sorry, this would probably be more helpful if I downloaded the same version you did, but my internet connection is yarble tonight.

So anyway, I got to the unpack stage, in the destination directory window I deleted everything after "desktop/" and clicked on "Extract To".

WinRAR extracted a file to the desktop like this:

I double click on that executable file and the installer runs and it's a no-brainer from there.

Are you using Firefox by chance? Can you go to the downloads window (if you recently d/l'd Gimp) and just double click on that to bring up WinRAR, hopefully having it pick automatically the installer?

bonds,

I think part of the problem lies in, from looking at you first screenshot, that you are extracting a particular file (gimp.....setup-1.exe) whereas I extracted a whole folder (gimp 2.6.7) and I can't find a specific setup file.
09-10-2009 , 09:52 PM
http://****************/projects/gimp...p.exe/download

here is a direct link of the setup.exe... just install it and u should be done imo
09-10-2009 , 09:54 PM
Someone else click that first.
09-10-2009 , 09:56 PM
lol srsly do u want to insult me?

http://www.gimp.org/downloads/ the link is directly from their homepage

just klick on: Download GIMP 2.6.7 – Installer for Windows 2000 and above

and u get the same link yourself, but w/e...
09-10-2009 , 09:59 PM
I was joking. I'm just holding off for a moment because I have a lead from the Computer Help forum.
09-10-2009 , 10:06 PM
well if you really downloaded the source code you wont find an installer in that package and u certainly didn't install anything. u just extracted the .rar package somewhere. so go to that folder and delete it and delete your downloaded .rar file and go with the installer i posted...
