Welcome to the United Nanny States of America, where your rights don't mean [censored].

Get used to it. You're gonna lose more and more rights as an American/free thinking human.
Whilst im not sold on quite how dangerous passive smoking is, it would be impossible to try and make a case that it is 100% not dangerous.

Your 'rights' as a smoker should never infringe on the rights of a non smoker.

Im not against smoking, im not even that big on avoiding smokers (my housemate smokes and one of my close friends does too and ive no problem with them smoking when im in the room or anything). But nobody truly chooses to smoke passively when in public, and so i have no problem whatsoever with such a ban.

Smoke in your car, smoke in your home. Move house if you cant smoke in your home. Whatever. Banning smoking is 100% right on every level.
The 'rights' of a non smoker should never infringe on the rights of a smoker.

There's 2 sides to every coin.
Is there a ban button for those who are stupid?

Smoking is banned in public because of the danger it is to the community. I think this is horse [censored]. I guarantee that more people are killed by strangers who are drinking and driving per year.

I do not drink and I think we should ban drinking. Someone might breath a wiff of my smoke and die 30 years later, but I could be killed by a drunk driver instantly on Sat night. That is much more dangerous.

I do not advocate banning alcohol, "I would never get laid if this was the truth" Im just making the point that its nothing more than the majority "non smokers" ganging up on the minority "smokers"

Funny this subject came up a couple days after I saw this video. It was eye opening espeically when you believed the propaganda, and I think everyone who has any opinions about second hand smoke needs to see this. The other side of the story that no one ever hears about, thanks to the media.

The evidence on the dangers of passive smoking is getting a lot better. In Scotland, since smoking was banned in enclosed public places, heart attacks among non-smokers have fallen by 20%. Unfortunately no-one thought to do similar studies in the other places it's been instituted. Article in The Guardian

Having said that, banning smoking in open areas is just ridiculous.

smoking doesnt cause cancer because cancer is caused by your own cells. There is always a probability of cancer cells forming in anyone no matter who or what they do but certain activities/chemicals/radiation w/e that skrew with the replication process of cells make it significantly more likely that mutant cells form. ie smoking nuclear rods or to a lesser extent cigerettes. It is very possible that someone could smoke till they were 100* and not get cancer but then they would be luckboxes. Second-Hand smoke will also increase the chances of rebel cells but not as much as a smoker. So statistically smoking is proven to "cause" cancer if the chemicals in cigs arnt scientifically proven to be a catalyst for increased mutant cells anyway

*not incl other side effects of smoking

Goddamn right. Once you accept government protection from outdoor smoking, or the hundreds of other things it wants to protect you from, you have no right to complain when they finally go after the things you want.

The research isn't published yet, but the article itself doesn't mean much at all. It doesn't say whether a drop in heart attacks makes any sense medically after only one year, or why both smoker and non-smoker rates dropped, or what percentage of both groups were ever exposed to enclosed second hand smoke. The same drop might be attributable to people drinking less, since they don't want to hang out at bars anymore. Or it could be attributable to weather patterns. Who knows. We won't even be able to see if its statistically significant until the paper is published, or what control variables were used, but from the numbers in the article, this paper smells a bit like [censored].

Fun fact:

Cigarette smoking has never been scientifically proven to cause cancer.
Chump Change - The following is from emedicinehealth.com

Quote:
Lung Cancer Causes

Cigarette smoking is the most significant cause of lung cancer. Research as far back as the 1950s clearly established this relationship.

* Cigarette smoke contains more than 4000 chemicals, many of which have been identified as causing cancer.
I don't see the "fun" in your fun fact. I personally have known people who died from lung cancer caused by cigarette smoking. It's not much "fun" for them or anyone close to them.

It is simply untrue that smoking has never been scientifically proven to cause cancer. Indeed it has.

I think its funny that smokers (or defenders of) will admit that cigarettes have many carcinogens but won't admit that cigarettes cause cancer, because well, how do you know for sure that it was the cigarettes?? Maybe it was just an odd weather pattern!! lolz

Cigarettes will def kill me. I will have a heart attack stroke or cancer.

Ok now I admitted that so tell me why it matters if I smoke in the open air. No one is going to have an effect in the least from my smoke in the open air areas.

Smokers generally (as evidenced by some in this thread) will claim the limited smoke I inhale when they're smoking nearby outdoors is so small it doesn't matter.

Well, no, on two counts.

One, it smells awful. If I'm hanging around for a bus, or at a coffee shop, it just sucks to have you stinking up the place for everyone near by.

Two, I'm mildly asmatic. Cigarette smoke sets it off (though, oddly, not so much with pipe smoke). I will, quite literally, have trouble breathing if I'm subject to 2nd hand smoke for any length of time (1 hour is about my max in a bar, couple hours in an outdoor smoking area).

So, I'm all for banning smoking except within your own home. I'll agree, seems incredibly stupid to ban it within your own house. However, if you're renting, I'm in favor of the owner having the right to ban smoking in the house because smoking causes a lot of damage. Carpets have to be cleaned multiple times, the smell actually gets into the drywall and you can't really ever quite get rid of it.
