[in it's purest form],
well, call me an old fart, but I feel something missing...
wait, I found it!
Intelligible vocals!

Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden are great. Rush isn't really my thing though.
Also, I'd say lyrics are really good in a bunch of underground metal bands like Disillusion, Exodus, Heathen and so on. It just depends on what you're looking for.

I definitely agree with the suggestion of Opeth especially if you're into extraordinarily epic guitar.
I also love any mention of Dying Fetus because that band is disgusting lol.

Further suggestions:
Dimmu Borgir
Abagail Williams
Pretty much the entire album Hate. Malice. Revenge. by All Shall Perish is a 25.2-minute high intensity brutality festival. Track 1.
And from my favorite band, Botch, who I first got turned on to by this cover which blew me away, like a death metal Trans-Siberian Orchestra, I'll suggest C. Thomas Howell As The 'Soul Man'

Death metal and black metal are like a pungent but delicious cheese. It makes me happy to see many of you enjoy it as much as I do

lots of prog metal here... opeth, amon amarth, arch enemy + billion other swede bands

dimmu borgir was good, but they kicked out 2 of their members in september, and cant see how they will continue when they kicked out ics vortex who was their clean vocal singer.

Just a bunch of bands I like in no particular order or style:

Blood has been shed(some meshugga influence with timing and whatnot)
Beneath the massacre(insanely talented band)
Oceano
Black dahlia murder
Local band near me called the breathing process
The faceless
Impending doom
Unearth but mostly their older stuff.

Take it for what its worth but I like these bands and they're all pretty badass

links to my 2 prior posts in reverse order.. Fight at the top, Prong below it : )

Much better video quality on the Prong vid, but the audio on both is good.

In terms of guitar, I always find it fun to learn/play Slayer riffs. They've had a few lessons in GuitarWorld magazine in teh past.

In terms of black metal, Gorgoroth. But I dont' play that on guitar.

There was a documentary that might be out now called Until the Light Takes Us about the Norwegian black metal history. Includes Varg and burning churches and stuff. Looked cool from the preview.

I saw mastadon opening for Tool, wasn't to my liking but to each their own.
Just out of curiousity, do most metalheads even consider tool to be metal? I tend to think of them as progressive metal.

Anyhow I really love the instrumental element of alot of the better prog metal bands, I just cant stand the complete lack of singing ability that 98 percent of bands have. I've seen way to many videos on youtube of 12 year old kids who can perfectly replicate the death metal screams to be impressed by it. That's just my opinion though.

Any suggestions for a metal band that plays extremely technically complicated music that has a decent vocalist that doesn't sound like he's from a hair band? So far the only band I've heard of that fits this description is tool.

quoted for awesomeness. If you like them you might like Korpiklaani, almost all their songs are about beer and fighting.

Most of their songs have some growls in them though. This one's fully clean.

I think he meant somewhere in between hair metal and thrash vocals, as well as still being progressive.

If the vocals aren't an issue as long as they aren't hair metal, give Atheist a spin. One of the founders of death metal with a large jazz influence.

Thanks.
This one has pretty awesome instrumentals and the vocals are decent. I'll probably look for some more stuff from these guys. Growls and Screams can be good, but only if used sparingly IMO. I prefer more traditional singers than the people trying to sound like "rock" singers.

I guess what I was trying to say was that almost all of the better metal bands sound almost identical as far as the vocals go. IMO it seems like when a group of talented musicians can't find a singer they say F-it let's make a metal band and people wont know the difference. I actually have a friend in a band that tells me it pretty much comes down to someone has to step up and sing or noone will listen to you no matter how good you play (except for buckethead.)

P.S. no offense is meant to anyone's preference in Metal, I know alot of people prefer the songs that are all growl.

Check out new Everytime I Die. Theyre hardcore/metal and the singer does scream most of the time, but hes an amazing singer and actually sings in some of their newer stuff which I love.

these guys take growling lyrics quite seriously imo

"The majority grindcore and fatal metal strips (orchestras) have the singers, trying to sound similarly to the broken (upset) deranged animals anyhow so they have decided to use a real thing. Vocals are executed by two pit bull terriers. Both were rescued days before euthanization from refuges. Caninus - all strict vegans. It has come time really to allow the animals to have their say."
