ok, I only asked because Dan compared what I was saying to Buddhism and you responded like it was a potential scourge on the American people- which is two pretty different reactions even if you both disagree/don't understand

anyways- why a good thing?

thats a good question. I'll have to get back to you on it.

Oh oh, got it... np.

Yes, I have nothing against Buddhism or any of the Eastern philosophies for that matter. However, I am horribly ignorant about them. I find all of this very interesting and FYI, I really really loved Amp's TR's on his experiences.

I think it's time for me to do some Googling....

(I'm googling living in the moment while the rest of the family is out in the pool swimming... Hmmm. )

Yeah I probably shouldn't have made the Buddhism statement, I wasn't really looking for a comparison between Buddhism and what Dustin was referring to, I just said it sounded similar to Buddhism, that's all. And I don't really understand enough about Buddhism to even make that statement, really.

The concept of Dustin's I'm struggling to grasp is the idea that human beings can disassociate themselves from their egos/self-images. Maybe some can, but personally, I don't think I ever could.
06-21-2008 , 11:27 PM
no, it was actually totally fine to compare it to Buddhism since thats pretty much what Buddhism is all about

*edit to say I just responded the way I did because I didn't want want I was saying compared to Buddhism because that can bring about all sorts of prejudices

OMG, OK this stuff is seriously deep (deep deep deep).... Wow wow wow... Boy did I have the wrong meaning....

The not having things revolve around the "I" is just the surface... Okay, this is very interesting. Also it is clear that my question "What is living in the moment?" isn't something that can be answered in a forum. It is really is a journey and somewhat unanswerable question.

10 min's (and easily could be 10 years) of googling was very insightful.

What job do you think you would have if it wasn't the current one involving sports right now?
06-22-2008 , 12:26 AM
Good question ... I'm assuming you want me to pick a job involving no sports whatsoever. Let me think about this. The tough part of this is, I knew since I was 16 what I would be doing career-wise, that's pretty unusual, so I haven't had to think about this in ages.

Quick guess, I may have tried my hand at songwriting.

There's also a small chance I would have tried to become a professional wrestler or referee. Had I been bigger (I graduated high school 5-8, 130 pounds, not ideal for a wrestler), I almost certainly would have given it a go.

EDIT: I know more wrestling holds/submissions than most wrestlers.

What kinds of music do you enjoy?
06-22-2008 , 01:16 AM
When you say professional wrestling, you don't mean that WWE WWF crap do you? I assume you mean like real grecco roman or freestyle wrestling?
06-22-2008 , 01:22 AM
he means the crap, except its not crap, its art

here is an awesome article on Andre The Giant btw

Just about anything not rap, alternative or heavy metal. I have a chorus background and was part of a barbershop quartet, so I enjoy groups that harmonize really well, like Boyz II Men. But that's not all I listen to ... it's kinda hard to define my musical leanings, my playlist really sums it up better than I can with words.

My playlist is on my MySpace page

I expect to catch some crap for this just like I did my movie choices. That's fine.

I've already caught two errors in that Andre story, LOL.

It was 93,000+ fans in the Pontiac Silverdome for Wrestlemania III (OK not a mistake but they underestimated it), and the rematch with Andre was, I think, 10 months later in early 1988, not two months later.

But 7k calories of alcohol/day.

And 119 beers!?!? Thats pretty amazing
06-22-2008 , 02:12 AM
The rest of the story was pretty awesome, even if it was somewhat exaggerated (that's just a guess but you know how all drinking stories are). Still, even if you cut everything in half, that's still awesome.
06-22-2008 , 02:18 AM
That story actually makes me want to watch The Princess Bride for the 48th time.

And that frees themselves up to be in the moment, so to speak.
This is not it. You are not comfortable or uncomfortable, you just are. It is really hard to explain. You like chick flicks: Do you remember the Nike commercial in "What Women Want?" It is kind of like that, sort of. Here is something for your reading enjoyment:

Here's a funny mistake I caught and corrected a few years back ... a church league softball score (this isn't the real one, I made something up just like it):

Virginia Ave. Church of God 10, Emmanuel Baptist 8
Virginia Ave.: Dave Richards and Mike Toms had seven hits each, while Luke Davis had sex.

Given "e" and "i" aren't even close on the keyboard I think it was intentional.

I've watched some UFC and some Pride (before it went under). For some reason I'm always a little uncomfortable watching those things ... I'm pretty queasy in general and I'm always fearful at any moment an arm or leg is gonna snap and I'm gonna be grossed out. Boxing doesn't do that to me. It's kind of weird.

That said, I think the potential for MMA to become absolutely huge (like boxing was back two to four decades ago) is there. (In some ways, it already is pretty huge.) I kind of think there needs to be one worldwide organization for it, with strong leadership, and some agreement in place so the fighters get paid fairly (I don't know a lot about how unions work or if they'd even be needed, there's no unions in boxing, right?), and then you'd have all the best fighters hopefully fighting each other under one banner and that would be awesome. Boxing, quite frankly, should be awesome, except all the alphabet soup of all these boxing organizations and the crap that goes on with it.

I think this has run its course. I've asked Durron to close the thread. Thanks to everyone who asked a question.
