Our Draft!

Magus and I did not have a specific strategy coming into the draft, but we made out with some great picks.

South Park- Still going strong after 15 seasons and showing no signs of stopping. The characters are instantly recognizable and the rewatchability is off the charts.

Star Trek: The Next Generation- The obvious choice for best Star Trek out there. Patrick Stewart as the best enterprise captain ever, and blind Levar Burton in an awesome visor? Yes please.

M*A*S*H - One of the first shows to very effectively mix comedy and drama. Its rewatchability has been a bit stunted by the fact that it is a bit dated, but nobody can deny the influence the show had on what television has become today. 125 million people tuning in for the finale can't be wrong.

Jeopardy! - The only choice for best game show. Wheel of Fortune is fun, Family feud is stupid but effective, and Who Wants to be a Millionaire ushered in a whole new generation of reality/game show television (not necessarily a good thing.) But Jeopardy's Question/Answer format, and the most smug awesome bastard host ever make this an easy game show pick. The 15 week stretch by Ken Jennings is some of the most compelling television ever.

Oz - Oz is another of those shows which was great to watch, but is also historic in changing the way Television works. Oz was the first TV series produced by HBO, and ushered in some of the greatest shows ever put to film, including the Sopranos. If Oz bombs, there is no premium TV series content on the big two Premium cable channels, and thats just a shame.

The Daily Show with Jon Stewart - Funny, Witty, Thoughtful, and the most effective device at getting young people out to vote. Jon Stewart is almost painfully smart, and it comes across perfectly in his comedy. The writing team is one of the best on television, and the ensemble team is always fun to watch, producing many stars in comedy including its own uber-star spinoff in Steven Colbert. Rewatchability is surprisingly high, as the older episodes are still hilarious and fun to watch.

That 70's show - Easily the best of the late 90's sitcoms, That 70's Show took a lot of chances with new filming styles an set pieces (pot circle, drug wall, etc) in its first season, and it paid off. The show produced some steady careers for its cast (Topher Grace and Laura Prepon) and created two of the biggest young icons in the mid 2000's (Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher.) Very funny almost to the end, though the last few seasons without Grace suffered a bit.

American Dad! - You think Family Guy is good? Check out American Dad!, Seth Macfarlane's lesser know but better animated series. While Family Guy is the more watched and therefore more scrutinized of the two shows, American Dad! has the freedom to not fall into conventions seemingly placed upon Family Guy. The show is much more of an animated sitcom than a crazy string of coincidental acts that don't add up to anything, with a clear plotline to every episode and some wonderfully fun characters. American Dad gets my nod any day.

Roseanne - Uniquely American in its approach, I put Roseanne at the top of my early 90's sitcoms. The show has an amazing amount of heart while being uproariously funny most times. The series final season is one of the blackest marks on television history, which just goes to show how amazing it was up until that point.

General Hospital - 12,526 episodes so far. While not having every one be gems, soap operas can be oddly compelling sometimes, and with almost two years of consecutive watching available, you are going to find something to watch and enjoy. lets not forget "supercouple" Luke and Laura, whose 1981 wedding brought in 30 million viewers and remains the highest-rated hour in American soap opera history. Thats a **** load of viewers for a soap opera.

Today or tomorrow. I think iversonian is the only write-up still out, and we may need to look up his team and go ahead and vote now.

Saw Parks and Rec talk earlier and wanted to ask a question..

I always hear how 3rd season is elite. 1st season, in my mind, was so terrible I couldn't even watch it. It was among the worst shows I feel like I've ever seen.

Is it different enough I'd enjoy season 3? Can I just start on season 3? Or is it maybe just not for me?

I'm not sure about going straight to season 3, but I'd give season 2 a try. I had exactly the same impression you did after the first season and almost didn't bother with more, but I'm glad I did.

Season 2 is also a huge improvement over season 1.

I'm among the few who also found season 1 enjoyable, but it seems to be universally agreed upon, that the show gets a (whole) lot better from season 2 and onwards.

No reason to skip S2 if you're gonna start watching imo.

I think we should do a movie draft.

Thoughts?

I was thinking we add a bit of a structure:

Something like

50's
60's
70's
80's
90's
00's
Alltime (time excluded - like a wildcard pick)
Foreign

Good/bad?
4hr rolling time limit
- PM player ahead of you

8-12 players
Writeup at the end.

nolan fanboys run the internet. discounting his microscopic debut film, he's made 6 legit movies...5 of them are in the imdb top 100 lol. that'll change to 6 out of 7 in about 12 weeks.

I love me some Nolan, but he seems to be a bit of a one trick pony.

draft was two years ago...he'd go higher now but still prolly not top 10/20. 6/7 still doesn't compare to 20+
