I couldn't remember what exactly Dustin Hoffman's motivation is in Tootsie but I remember by the end he had some kind of "identification with the opposite sex" which was what was in the question thread, so I thought it might be allowed.
The character in question must identify with the other gender or at least have some gender identity confusion. A completely 'straight' character who cross dresses strictly for disguise or finanacial gain will not count.
Well, my character was unquestionably a transvestite, arguable to how "main" he was, but his character was pretty crucial to the story- and probably had as much screen time as the Silence of the Lambs character.
But I had a feeling this was coming, after the pre-debate. Just hate to drop in the standings like that, when I could have put like 10 other answers had I known- including at least a couple uniques (has anybody heard of Almodovar here?) had I realized mine would be no good.
Only because movies are my main thing does it suck to lose one like that. But it's cool.
Jame (birth certificate misprint of James) Gumb (Ted Levine) is a fictional serial killer from the movie Silence of the Lambs. He likes to kidnap fat women and keep them in a pit for three days up to a week before shooting or hanging them, then flaying them and sewing their skin together to make a suit. He is known to the FBI as "Buffalo Bill" because "Buffalo Bill liked to skin his humps." He believes that he is transexual and tried to get a sex change but could not because he was proven not to be transexual.
Also, I should read all pages of these threads before I submit my answers.....I would have gone away from Tootsie then..
And IMO, regardless of my answer, Tootsie should count as good. Even though Hoffman's sexuality remains basically intact, there is enough cross-gender activity and interaction for it to qualify IMO. Just as I would definitely count Some Like it Hot (which I was surprised wasn't mentioned, though I guess I'm old or cinematically injected) and probably White Chicks as well, though I haven't seen it.
This isn't the same thing as Sylvester Stallone and Kurt Russell dressing in drag for one scene in Tango & Cash, which is what I thought we were disqualifying...

'stardust' was my big one pointer, with robert dinero's great trannie scenes...i was psyched to remember it. and less psyched later when i realized i got the title wrong and wrote 'golden compass' instead. duh
