Don't take the stake unless you need it. These types of deals inevitably lead to resentment on one side or both.

Yeah I can't imagine ever taking a stake from a non-player who I want to remain on good terms with. As a player, the only reason to ever take a stake is because you're getting the best of it at the other person's expense.

Keep playing on your own dime IMO.

So, is there any merit to raising to get a better handle of where you are in a hand and/or slow the villain down?

I keep hearing about not being passive and I do find myself calling a lot of flop/turn bets and having to make a tough decision on the river.

I've been experimenting with firing back raises on the flop where I feel like I'm ahead but not by any means with a great hand.

I've been doing it when I think villain is cbetting just to cbet or with lags that I know are going to keep firing.

I'm not raising on air. I do have some showdown value but these aren't great hands.

It's a small sample size but it has been effective so far. I'd like some opinions, though.

If they are folding then you shouldn't be doing it with the best hand.

They aren't always folding. So far it's been a mix of folding and checking back the turn.

But your answer is what always confuses me. Everyone says stop being so passive?

being passive is correct when your hand is somewhere in the middle of your opponent's range (and they are being aggressive)

no one knows **** about poker, don't listen to what they say.

If your opponents are betting too much, why would you want to discourage them?

Real hand

2 limpers and I raise to $12 in late position with AK. One early limper calls. Villain is not a typical lagtard but he is aggressive and he's capable of triple barreling on air. That being said, he doesn't play garbage. I'd have him as one of the better players at 1/2.

Flop is K93r. V donk bets $20.

What's my play?

Call and let him barrel.

this is an easy call because you have a great hand, but it's not a monster. generally people don't play huge pots(with lots of raising) with only one pair. and all you can beat is one pair. so usually if it's a monster pot, you will lose if all you have is one pair.

in this situation it's better to raise with A3 than AK. especially since you said he is likely to triple barrel. you want him to triple barrel. but if you raise you are screaming that you have a K at least. so he is unlikely to continue if he can't beat a K.

also his $20 bet is pretty big. you would have been happy to make a bet that big yourself and get called, so no need to raise it up.

down 35k in my last 7 sessions. first 3 flops i saw i flopped top two, set, boat, and lost all 3.

made a bad call on my last hand of the night. villain had only been playing about an hour, and me and him got into 2 pots and he raised me off both of them. third pot i have AhAc on the button. he opens for 60. i make it 200. he calls

flop(400)9h4c2h
check
i bet 200
he raises to 600
i call

turn(1600)8d
check
i bet 1200
he calls

river(4000)8h
he shoves 1500
i call
ldo he has KhQh

i would have snap folded if he hadn't raised me in the only other 2 pots we played.
