I need to listen to this one again to figure it out. It's a very modern take on jazz, and I'm not sure how I feel about it. It has an experimental feel, which is okay, as long as it's well done, and it was. It leaned on the drums, but it was done cleanly, much better than A Night In Tunisia. One problem with this tune was that jazz should relax or excite you; this kept me on edge, like I was in a thriller.

Could this category I know nothing about be the one where I finally break top 10?

Middle of the road cool jazz – good, but nothing special. It uses hot moments acceptably. I don't mind listening to it again, but won't cue it up on the playlist.

I both liked and didn't like this – weird. I would have it on a playist, but probably wouldn't seek it out. Better than Enlightenment. Probably, this is very close to what I want, and having it just be off a bit is what irks me. Good vocals and a talented group behind her.

A mid-temperature jazz that works, but it seems to lack soul. Good for a playlist, but I wouldn't pay attention to it. Nothing really wrong and nothing really right.

One of the oldest pieces, so it lacks some of the subtlety and complexity of later works, but it does carry me along on its ride. Probably background music that I would pause to listen to. Solid mid-temp tune, but nothing noteworthy.

Very pleasant, but I sometimes get the feeling that I am listening to this while waiting for something else. Kind of Muzak-y, but good. It has an experimental feel that is done well. This is something I would have in the background at the beach.

Nice vocals. Another piece that is reminiscent of older music. She has a real old school vocal style and quality. The music is workman-like, solid but not inspired, but I suppose that should be the case where the vocals are the feature. The accordian is nice, though. Overall, good, but I don't need to listen to it again.

This is the definition of hot jazz. Clean sounds and no competition between instruments. It's very listenable, and I would listen to it again. It's [Artist's Last Name]!

And I feel really bad about it. I love both these guys, but this song just didn't do it for me. In fact, my immediate reaction was quite negative.

What can I say about [Song Title]? It's a classic song, and this is the definitive version. It is the best song with vocals. It could be a small problem that the vocals are dominant, but there will always be a dominant instrument. The only issue is that I am quite familiar with this song, so I feel I must demote it a little, but it's too good to drop too far.

Eric, when you read this, I'm curious whether any of these other songs by her would have scored better for you; I was considering them as alts

City of Roses - Esperanza Spalding

Fragile - Esperanza Spalding and Herbie Hancock

Earth to Heaven - Esperanza Spalding

(and since you seemed to "almost" really like her, maybe one of these is more likely to make you a fan; i think she's phenomenal)

Very nice. Cool jazz that warms up later. Loving the conversation between the horns. This is the kind of thing I was hoping to get. This is a modern retrospective on, say, 60's jazz. Really well done, and clear. Energetic without getting muddled.
