I was going to delete people I didn't know from facebook, but I got to the letter C and had got rid of like 20 then realised I shouldn't delete any more for self esteem reasons
05-07-2011 , 12:15 PM
I just block their posts from appearing
05-07-2011 , 12:15 PM
I essentially deleted all of mine.

I don't have self esteem issues.

Annoying people get axed.
05-07-2011 , 12:16 PM
Well I was just deleting people I didn't care about, which turns out to be an awful lot of them
05-07-2011 , 12:19 PM

Taxpaying citizens can't board a plane without being stripsearched and irradiated but the NYC subways allow vagrants to carry around saws?

I've been debating whether to do another round of cleansing before I hit 100 friends. Seems like a fun milestone to hit, but I don't want to get there and drop below it again. Which means I'd have to keep people even longer. The decisions I'm faced with these days...

chamber music. it takes talent to make it in the big apple, even as a vagrant

Bought a telescope today. Really cloudy evening, so just spent an hour looking at trees

Geeking out majorly over here

i need to ask you for some telescope buying expertise one day

I once stayed in a hotel in arizona which had a telescope, and the employee who had the knowledge showed us a bunch of stuff - it was very good - the moon, saturn and moons, the like, only the telescope was concreted into the ground by the side of the pool which had perma-electric lighting around it, which seemed pretty dumb given a 5 minute drive into the desert let you see about 10,000 times as many stars as in the uk

Telescope buying is kinda easy. Bigger the instrument, the more you see. If you want it to be vaguely portable (i.e, I plan on carting mine to the Scottish highlands which would be nice and clear) it should be reasonably small (6 inches or smaller, 8 inches start to get a bit bulky). And obviously, the bigger they are, the more expensive they are.

Most, if not all, new telescopes will come with an electronic finder so you just plug in the date, time and where you are. Plug in where 2 or 3 bright stars are and it can just point itself to whatever you tell it to, which is pretty cool as a beginner to not have to find everything.

The only actual physical shop in the south of England is in Dorking, they were nice and just carted out a solar telescope so we could have a look.

Getting a decent model (I got a Celestron, the other one I was looking at was a Meade [but that was more expensive for an extra I didn't think I needed, so I passed]) is a lot of it, but yeah, where you are should be somewhat dark (at least darker than where I am) so you'd get nice images with a reasonably cheap thing.

I plan on taking some long exposure pictures with my SLR attached to it, and stacking them, see what sort of results I get.

This was a longer post than I thought it would be

1) i seem to recall getting the impression that you have to know your **** because it's possible to buy something that the specs are just nonsensical
2) how much are we talking for what sort of widget?

Well, a 4 inch would be about £400, a 5 inch is about £600, a 6 inch is about £800 and an 8 inch is about £1200.

The Meades are more expensive because basically, they've got a little diddy camera in the front where you just uncap it, and it can orientate itself without you having to put in some numbers. Might save you 5-10 minutes, but really not worth the extra few hundred pounds.

What you get in the big box would do you just fine. You might wanna buy a power supply so you don't have to bother fussing with getting a mains power supply all the time, they're only about £50, and the one I got comes attached to a torch which has the power of 800,000 candles, which is just very cool on it's own.

I mean, if you go to a shop, or ring up an online dealer, and just ask for something fairly basic that's just point and shoot, they'll be able to help you. With the effect that Brian "standing on a mountain" Cox has had they've had plenty of new people who have wanted to buy telescopes.

Why is it cloudy?
