If you could demonstrate that lack of brain stimulation causes the amyloid thing and the protein deposits, you could get yourself a nice sinecure or tenure or something.
Im going to read up on this more now ty

Yeah I've not been to Morocco, could see it being a good winter destination though. I've heard people complain it's too crowded, going in offseason might help with that.

That is a pretty sweet idea actually. Like Paris -> Bordeaux -> San Sebastian -> Madrid -> some Southern Spanish city or Gibraltar or something -> Morocco. Could even sub in Barcelona or Valencia for Madrid if so inclined.

I agree about Dubronik - I wasn't there long but man, it was gorgeous.

I disagree with people dissing Amsterdam but to each their own. I think it's an interesting city even outside the red light district.

Plus the Van Gogh museum is basically the perfect size. Just when I'm starting to get bored, you're done.

I mean maybe I'm just an uncultured boor but big museums are just overwhelming. At a certain point you just reach saturation and another painting or statue fails to make any sort of impression.

Too....much....art......

Large museums you have to do in more than one day. It's how I feel about the V&A/National Gallery/British Museum (other people would say the Science Museum but I'm totally happy staying in there all day), and how I've heard the Louvre described
09-27-2013 , 09:48 AM
but then I really do just not get art at all.

I went to the national gallery with my friend and she spent 4 hours in one section and I curled up on a chair and napped/read. then the next day we went to the Tate Britain and I was about ready to blow my brains out

Art sucks, it's why we invented TV.

huge museums are the worst

when one painting blends into another
when you look at a Cezanne with complete disinterest
nothing is functioning according to its essence.
you are functioning as a data processor
categorizing
ticking pieces off a checklist
art is functioning as information
nothing is revealed.

graffiti can be the best
there should just be a wall
instead, bam!
you relate to the world
through this medium
through this image
everything coheres.

megamuseums
are the graveyards of art
the paintings are their own tombstones
sculptures their own sepulchers.

where no further possibilities exist
stick it on the wall
and charge admission.

when availability is too high
the lover withdraws
teasing out the coy
releasing the concealed
is true appreciation
of essence.

Yeah obviously for a huge museum multiple days is ideal but when you're only there for a short time some people feel the need to try to cram it all in.

When I was living in Belgium my parents and my dad's sister came to visit. My aunt had never been to Europe before, and she likes to paint.

My God.

Every place we went we had to hit multiple museums. It was numbing. You just can't appreciate much of anything fully.

It was pretty terrible TBH but my aunt would never have another chance to see any of it so even though the rest of us were gritting our teeth before too long we just went with it.

Dubrovnik was... I dunno, it was OK. I find that "Adriatic" look (white walls, orange/red rooves) a bit boring. And the city felt a little bit touristed out. Even on the Croatian coast I think I'd prefer to spend time in Split.

All this I do agree with. I have very little interest in the pure arts but the Van Gogh museum was really good. The interesting aspect is how it tracks and explains his descent into mental illness and you can see that reflected in the paintings.

When I talk about cities being beautiful ITT, it has to be put into the context that I really don't give a **** about architecture, museums, churches etc. I actually have a travel rule "no churches" which I break only infrequently (the Sagrada Familiar, St Peter's Basilica, Kostnice Ossuary etc). Usually I regard cities as being for excitement and nightlife and the natural scenery as being for beauty. So if I say a city is beautiful, you can believe it.

Another good travel rule is not to do the "must do" stuff. If you have only a short time in Paris and the Louvre doesn't really excite you, DONT GO! There's plenty of awesome stuff in Paris. The Catacombs were way more interesting to me than the Louvre, for instance.

The Sagrada was the first time I ever came across a building and was genuinely stunned. I had no idea what it looked like, I was in Barcelona with work and figured 'oh hey while I'm here I'll go visit that cathedral everyone talks about' with no idea what to expect. Hadn't even seen pictures of it online or anything as far as I remember. I literally turned a corner and found it right in front of me and just...holy ****. Just had no idea how to process it.

Sagrada is the only reason I want to go to Barcelona

I was a bit the same, hadn't really seen it much before. I hit Barcelona at a point in my trip where I was a bit burnt out, so I spent my time there almost entirely drinking at my hostel, talking to people and relaxing. The only two times I ventured out there were to see the Sagrada Familiar and hike the Carretera de les Aigües. Both were well worth it.

elegance requires a projection of self-assuredness and poise

she looks like she just opened a huge tax bill
